This braided wrap is handmade by HIV positive artisans in Rwanda (all genocide survivors) who are working to take their steps out of poverty and towards empowerment. These women are supported by the trade-not-aid jewelry initiative Same Sky. The wrap is most commonly worn as a bracelet that wraps around one's wrist 4 - 5 times. It can also be worn as a necklace, hair accessory or anklet. The material is braided Rwandan textiles; adorned with a few hand blown glass beads.
Same Sky employs HIV positive women in Rwanda and Zambia as artisans. Same Sky artisans earn a wage that is substantially greater than the average wage of most women in sub Saharan Africa. All net proceeds are reinvested into the business to buy more materials, employ more women and expand into new regions.
