Overpriced but decently flattering
I bought this dress in both colors in a size Small. I'm a 36 C cup and I'm 5'4". The length and overall fit were okay, though not quite as flattering as I had hoped. While the "Plum" color gives off a lovely gypsy vibe when paired with the right jewelry, the white one is not completely white the way it appears in the picture. It's gently dyed at the top and bottom as well with a very pale blue. I'm not sure if it's just because it wasn't what I expected, but rather than looking like it's meant to be dyed that way, it almost looks like a dirty dishwater stain instead. I'm just not sure how I feel about it. I scored these dresses for $55 a piece on double sale, and honestly, I'm questioning if they are worth it. The cotton doesn't feel like it will last, it wrinkles easily, and the raw hem at the bottom started coming undone just from being tried on. I just don't foresee these dresses lasting very long. On the plus side, I really appreciated the amount of coverage. It completely covers a strapless bra and is slightly more 'family friendly" than some of the other Free People dresses, which is great for work. I'm really going to have to think about whether or not I can keep these. They cover nicely and flatter decently, but I feel like even at $55 I paid too much. I can't believe these dresses were almost $200 to start. They'll either grow on me or go back to the store.
I am between a 10 & 12 so I ordered the Plum in 10 (last one in stock) & decided to order a 12 in Ivory. Both dresses are gorgeous! The Ivory one is quite sheer so you will definitely want to wear a slip under it. Also, the pics don't do the ivory one justice. It looks like it is all white but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was also dip dyed just like the plum. The top and bottom of the dress are the palest, prettiest shade of icy blue. The 10 fit ok but was just a bit tight in the chest on me. Definitely size up if you are chesty -- I am a D cup.
Unique Style in Real Cotton
It's a beautiful dress, and the dye makes it even better. I think it's overpriced, but that's all relative. It's made In India and the fit isn't perfectly done, as most of the dresses out of India aren't , and the cotton isn't of the best quality. (In the 1970's, cotton clothing from India was the cheap and hip thing to wear---but you knew the quality was low and it was kind of a 'toss-away' item) However, this is a pretty casual dress that I'd feel very comfortable wearing as my summer day dress, or even some night affairs that are more artistically inclined. My problems: 1) It was waaaay too long for my petite self (5"0"). I could have it hemmed, which would be an improvement over the non-hem that it comes with. 2) I wanted to wear a bra with it, but the straps don't look good in the front because the dress straps are closer to the middle. If it hadn't been for the straps issue, I'd probably have kept it. You should be aware that the button part down the side is roughly done and looks a bit awkward. For $200, I would prefer to have something a little better made with a better fit. It's the style, I believe, that makes this a dress worth having.
This is one of those pieces that you don't come across, like ever. All cotton, gorgeous dip dye, and perfect fit. Love the attention to detail with the buttons up the side, pretty lace details, and perfect fit. It fits my slim 5'7" frame better than the model shows. I bought a size 2; I'm 127 pounds, 36 (barely) B, and am smallest on top. If you are top heavy you may want to size up.
