Why You Shouldn’t Snooze On Sleep Masks

The key to good zzz’s starts here.

I’m an insomniac. So most nights, you’ll find me watching tv or scrolling endlessly on my phone, waiting desperately for sleep to come. Over the past three years, I’ve tried just about everything to combat my sleeplessness: tart cherry juice, melatonin, CBD, wine, supplements to induce rest and relaxation, etc. Finding little success with these, I decided to start fresh and employ two simple techniques: no phones near the bed (bye, blue light), and sleep masks. Read on to see how these sleep aids held up…at keeping me down.

KITSCH SATIN SLEEP MASK

I already use a silk pillowcase to protect my hair, so I thought – why not a silk sleep mask? The styles I wore prior to this sleep test were one-size-fits-all, which resulted in them sliding off my head through already restless sleep. This one, from Kitsch, is adjustable which helped it to stay in place the entire night. I actually woke up the next morning confused about what time it was because it let zero light sneak in. I didn't have any breakouts while using it and I definitely got more – and more quality – sleep. Did I mention it was reversible?

RE.VITYL TOURMALINE MASK

Think of Re-Vityl’s mask as a weighted blanket for your eyes, made only slightly thicker and heavier than most masks to accommodate its Tourmal.ink® insert. The crystal tourmaline is said to possess negative ions that encourage relaxation when placed on or near the body. Whatever the reason, this mask put me to sleep faster than I expected. It, like the Kitsch option, is adjustable and keeps everything nice and dark..

POPMASK STARRY EYES SELF-HEATING MASK

I appreciated the concept that is Starry Eyes’ Warming Mask before even trying it – a mask that warms within 30 seconds to soothe tired eyes. But I was a little unsure of whether it would play nice with my pre-sleep eye creams. Turns out that the mask’s gentle mix of natural ingredients delivered via non-woven cotton did just fine.. Pro: The mask hit comfortably warm, and felt good ala spa vibes. Con: This is a single-use mask, which means I’ll have to buy these in multiples.

RE.VITYL SLEEP MAGIC MIST

I know…not a sleep mask. But the thought of supporting better sleep through scent was intriguing and, especially to my inner insomniac, worth a try. I opted to spray Re.Vityl’s Sleep Magic Mist all around my pillow pre-bedtime. (I especially love that the formula is 100% organic.) Its soothing mix of lavender, rose and chamomile oils provided a light yet adequate melatonin boost.

RE.VITYL PHONE DETOX CASE

Admittedly, putting my phone away and out of arm's reach was the hardest thing for me to do – I grew so accustomed to playing games on my phone to pass the time. This copper- and nickel-lined case served both as a deterrent from grabbing my device, and block from call signals and wifi. Though I didn’t necessarily feel anything, the peace of mind the case gave me helped to keep me relaxed. And luckily, my alarm still went off in the morning.
In conclusion – yes, I will be befriending these sleep masks (and other accoutrements) every night. I appreciate any chance to explore and use natural sleep aid options without having to take supplements or costly potions lol. I feel more rested when I wake up and able to better function throughout the day. I can’t wait to see what more benefits arise – along with me.
