Itchy, dry scalp is a common ail for many of us. Whether chronic or incendiary, triggered by allergy or a shift in seasons, we can all agree that it is a far from pleasant experience, and can infiltrate the core of our well-being if left untreated or unrelieved.
I had the pleasure of working alongside Helen Reavey, the founder of wildly popular hair- and scalp-care brand, Act+Acre, when she was working as a freelance stylist. Although it’s been years since we last spoke, I knew that Helen would have a definitive answer to my (and perhaps your) question about saving my dry scalp, for good. And I was right.

HELP, DELIVERED
“My Scalp Is SO Dry! What Can I Do???”
By: Carrie Yotter
Quick answer: Act+Acre’s Daily Hydro™ Scalp Serum.
FREE PEOPLE: Can you share with our FP Community a quick history of your relationship with FP? I mean, I met you as a stylist many years ago?
HELEN REAVEY: I was very lucky to have worked with the Free People team for many years, doing hair for photoshoots and campaigns, and traveled with them to many beautiful destinations. I absolutely loved it and really felt like part of the FP family.
FP: And at what point did Act + Acre enter the picture? Was it something you’d been thinking about for a long time?
HR: Scalp care and hair care have always been a part of my life. Growing up I struggled with seborrheic dermatitis as a kid and into my teenage years – I could never find a product that fully got rid of the irritation and flakes. I continued to have a passion for hair care and ended up going back to school to become a hairstylist after college. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of working on so many different projects from salon to runway to editorial and everything in between – I’ve been able to try so many new styles and colors.

HR: I was leading a show at Paris Fashion Week and while working on the models I couldn’t help but realize how irritated their scalps were from product + styling build-up. It led me to the realization that the industry didn't have anything to serve to nourish, balance, and stimulate the scalp – so I created Act+Acre!
FP: What seems to be true for most founders – an unwavering need to fulfill a “miss” in the industry, re: addressing a specific need, or inability to find and use certain ingredients, a general dissatisfaction with existing options, or all of the aforementioned. This suits your creation story as well?
HR: Definitely – I was struggling personally with scalp issues, and continued to see it across the board with my clients, and I couldn’t find any clean options that actually solved the problem. We saw Act+Acre as an opportunity to invent our own playbook:
-While everyone was focused on the hair itself, we turned to the scalp and created a completely new category.
-While everyone else used traditional manufacturing methods, we innovated and patented our own - the Cold Processing Method.
-While brands turn to celebrities to bolster their growth, we leaned into science + education. My trichologist knowledge has been instrumental in the brand’s success – whether building our community, developing our products, and more.
FP: Act+Acre prides itself on developing what you call the Cold Processed® technique. Without giving away too much, can you describe how that makes your products more effective?
HR: This technique sets us apart from other brands on the market. We collaborated with chemists to innovate traditional product manufacturing practices and avoid heat-based production. As a result, our formulas retain up to 96% more vitamins while utilizing 90% less energy than other hair care brands on the market.
FP: Let’s talk specifically about your new “Hydro Serum,” since Act+Acre has a few – what makes this one unique?
HR: I am SO excited about this launch! Our Daily Hydro™ Scalp Serum is filled with powerful skincare actives, such as Hyaluronic Acid, Amino Acids, and Glycerin which work together to deliver deep hydration and fortify your scalp’s natural barrier. Similar to the skin barrier, the scalp barrier serves as the first line of defense against environmental aggressors, oxidative stress, and moisture loss. Also, as a bonus, you can use this on your face.

FP: Achieving a healthy scalp is challenging for so many of us! What issues does your “Hydro Serum” address best?
HR: A hydrated scalp is a key component to maintaining a healthy + strong barrier to prevent scalp concerns before they develop – this serum offers intense hydration to soothe dry scalps and support long term scalp health.
FP: How much does lifestyle/environment play a role in scalp health? Have you adopted any helpful personal habits that are of note?
HR: Lifestyle and environment play a significant role in scalp health, influencing everything from oil production to the overall condition of your scalp. Factors like stress, diet, exposure to pollutants, and even the water you wash your hair with can impact the health of your scalp.

-A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats is crucial for scalp health. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, biotin, and zinc support a healthy scalp and hair growth.
-Chronic stress can disrupt the hormonal balance, leading to scalp issues like dryness, flakiness, or even conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.
-Incorporating stress-reducing practices like mindfulness, exercise, and adequate sleep can support scalp health.
-Staying hydrated helps maintain the moisture balance of the scalp, preventing dryness and irritation.
-Pollution can lead to the buildup of particles on the scalp, potentially causing irritation or inflammation. Regular cleansing and protective products can help mitigate this.
-Hard water, which contains high levels of minerals, can cause buildup on the scalp and hair, leading to dryness and irritation. Using a water softener or a clarifying treatment can help combat this issue.
-Cold, dry weather can lead to scalp dryness and flakiness, while excessive sun exposure can cause scalp irritation and damage. Protecting the scalp with appropriate products and head coverings can make a big difference.
For me, maintaining a consistent scalp care routine is essential. I’ve adopted habits like using a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and a hydrating scalp serum daily. I also prioritize a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support scalp and hair health. Incorporating mindfulness practices into my routine helps manage stress levels, which I’ve found to be incredibly beneficial for my overall scalp health, along with daily scalp massages.
FP: What’s the best way to use this serum?
HR: I recommend using it daily, on a clean damp or dry scalp. With daily application, the scalp will instantly feel more hydrated, while preventing future scalp sensitivities! I also use the formula all over my face and even put it on my ends when my hair is feeling a bit dehydrated.
FP: Can it be used by anyone?
HR: Yes! We specifically made this formula so that anyone could use it. It’s free of any alcohols, fragrance, and essential oils so it’s great for sensitive scalps. It’s also safe for anyone with color and/or chemically treated hair since it contains Hyaluronic Acid, which delivers hydration to various layers of the scalp and hair shaft, while Amino Acids help lock in moisture and strengthen the scalp barrier. Daily Hydro is a great option for anyone who wants to prioritize scalp care but isn’t sure where to start. It’s super lightweight like hyaluronic acid serum for your face, and absorbs fast into the skin leaving no residue. It's also fragrance free which is crucial for all scalp treatments, and many times overlooked.
FP: What else is helpful for someone to know who is suffering from scalp issues?!
HR: I think it’s important to start by understanding the reason for your scalp concerns so that you can address them properly! For example:
-Hair Thinning: Often linked to hormonal changes, genetics, or poor scalp health. Ingredients like Plant stem cells, biotin, caffeine, and peptides can stimulate the follicles and promote healthier hair growth.
-Oily Scalp: Excess oil production can lead to greasiness and contribute to dandruff. Look for * products containing salicylic acid, niacinamide or green tea, which help absorb excess oil and balance sebum production.
-Dandruff: Characterized by flaking and itching, dandruff is often caused by fungal infections or dry skin. Antifungal agents like salicylic acid, fireweed extract and amino acids can all be effective.
-Itchiness: Itchy scalps can be due to dryness, irritation, or allergies. Soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients like peppermint oil, aloe vera, frankincense and fireweed extract can calm the scalp and reduce itching. -Scalp Acne: Acne on the scalp is often caused by clogged pores. Products with salicylic acid or niacinamide can help keep the scalp clean and prevent breakouts.
-Sensitivity/Irritation: This can be due to harsh ingredients or environmental factors. Gentle, hypoallergenic products with soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and fireweed can be beneficial.
