STYLING 101:
Mastering the Art of the Pant

We LOVE our jeans…sometimes, however, you need to paint with broader strokes.
Pants people, unite.
We’re officially coining 2026 as The Year of the Pant. Okay, I know what you’re thinking: “Pants have literally been around for thousands of years? They are not groundbreaking? Why are we dedicating a year to them?”
Listen–I get it. What I’m trying to say, as a self-proclaimed “jeans person,” is that I sometimes find buying and styling pants to be a bit of a challenge. Trousers can feel too stuffy, workwear styles too casual. You get the idea. Luckily, FP has a ton of not-so-run-of-the-mill pairs that make pants feel…exciting? From bold silhouettes to unique wash treatments, I’m feeling more inspired than ever to style my look from the bottom(s) up.
I’m determined to wear the pants this year, so here are the seven Team FP-approved pairs of pants that are rounding out my spring wardrobe:

I’m determined to wear the pants this year, so here are the seven Team FP-approved pairs of pants that are rounding out my spring wardrobe:
OUR 7 FAVORITE PANT TRENDS OF 2026
THE NOT-SO-TAILORED TROUSER
Don’t get me wrong, I really do love a good trouser, but they aren’t an “everywhere pair” to me. Meaning, I can’t just throw them on and know they’ll look good with most anything in my closet. The Spotlight Washed Chino Trousers are the perfect mix of off-duty and elevated, with a soft cotton twill for a brushed hand feel and a slightly tapered silhouette for a contemporary touch. Paired with a simple tee and sneakers? Easy. Styled with a sleek bodysuit and kitten heels? Effortless. They’re like the cool older sister of your school uniform pants.
THE TRENDING SILHOUETTE FOR 2026: BALLOON PANTS
Say with me: balloon silhouettes are the moment. They’re fun. They’re voluminous. They’re a new shape to add to your wardrobe. What more could you ask for? The Moonflower Balloon Pants feature a boldly bubbled shape with an easy pull-on waistband and pleating throughout for a comfy-meets-structured look–which is basically FP’s ethos when it comes to pants. Lean into a classic boho look with a ruffled blouse or keep it simple with a basic tee…you can’t go wrong either way.
THE “EVERY DAY IS A BEACH DAY” PAIR
Whether you live by the ocean or are daydreaming of your next sandy getaway, the Day’s End Striped Pants will instantly transport you to a sunny state of mind, no matter where you are. With a breezy cotton-linen blend for texture, pull-on waist, and a yarn-dyed stripe finish, people will ask, “Where did you get those?” And can you blame them? Keep it easy with a button-down or play with contrast by adding a delicate eyelet top and kitten heels for a fun, spring-forward look.
THE QUINTESSENTIALLY FP WIDE-LEG PANT
Just as their name suggests, the Sweet Serenade Wide-Leg Pants are a dreamy pair with delicate detailing that immediately draws you in. The embroidered eyelet detailing is the perfect statement touch, while the exaggerated silhouette with asymmetrical hem adds a bit of dimension to the overall shape of the pant leg. They’re a mix of classic and unique, and fun real estate for fresh outfitting. Add an easy tee, bold hip belt, or boudoir-inspired brami top for endless ways to wear.
THE NOT-YOUR-DAD’S CARGO PANTS
Let’s face it–cargo pants have come a long way, and lately, they’re all over our mood boards. The techy fabrics, the surplus-style pockets, and effortlessly baggy fit are the perfect combination for a fitted top and sleek sandals. The Onset Cargo Pants are no exception. Lately, we’ve been styling these with a slim, basic tank top and thong sandals. Add a few chunky necklaces and an oversized bag? Your easiest “cool girl” outfit yet.
THE HAND-TOUCHED HEAD TURNER
Collegiate-inspired detailing, handcrafted lace patchwork, and a varsity number walk into a pant…meet the Rockaway Craft Pants. A true testament to our Free People brand handwriting, these feature a mix of styles and sensibilities that somehow just make sense when you put them all together. Experiment with textures by adding a sweater tank, throw on some oversized aviators, and smile–because you won’t find this pair anywhere else.
THE CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC: HAREM PANTS
We can’t help it! We love a harem pant! If you haven’t noticed, we currently can’t get enough of oversized and slouchy fits. The Endless Nights Harem Pants feature that typical low-slung look with a slightly tailored finish and cropped ankle. Balance them out with a delicate cutwork top or seamless cami, tie it all together with a braided belt, and say hello to your new favorite pair of the season.
So if you need us, we’ll be wearing these pairs for the foreseeable future…and mastering the art of the pant while we’re at it.
