Festival Style Tips From FP

WHAT TO WEAR THIS FESTIVAL SEASON

Springtime marks a lot of firsts for me, not least of which is the endless loop of festival lineups that start inundating my social feeds. Truth be told, even as I get older, I can’t help but scroll through each name, down to those in the TINIEST font (why so tiny?) looking for bands taking headliner rank, those who I’ve only just heard of, and those who are making some sort of (hopefully) triumphant comeback, all the while imagining what I’ll be wearing while singing and swaying along.

Oh, but then there’s the whole packing part. Not my fave. But considering that I’m a carry-on suitcase loyalist, simplifying this process is essential. With the help of my oh-so-talented and music-obsessed FP teammates, we’ve put together an unofficial festival outfitting guide so you can travel light, and have THE BEST 2026, with a soundtrack to remember.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING YOUR FESTIVAL OUTFIT

There’s a very traditional “festival look” that comes to mind (ahem bohemian), but what you pack is a purely personal, albeit spiritual decision because… a Geese crowd looks very different than one watching Little Sims (I assume?!). Think about the what’s of your festival itinerary…
  • Will you be close to your lodging in case of a quick change?
  • Do you need clothes that will easily transition from sun up to sundown, i.e. layers?
  • Will nighttime be considerably cooler?
  • What are the chances that it might rain?
  • Will you be walking or standing for long stretches of time? (Comfort matters.)
  • Do you need outfits that can do double-time for both travel and the festival?
Seemingly fuddy-duddy questions, but ones that might save you both headaches and heartaches while you’re in the moment.

2026 FESTIVAL STYLING TRENDS

START WITH…THE ICONIC FESTIVAL DRESS

Why it works: One easy piece, layered for morning chill and evening warmth.
Styling tips: Add a light jacket, ankle boots, or sneakers for comfort.

There was a time when Free People served as a destination for all things bohemian and, with that, dresses. Though we’ve “grown up” a bit, we’re not ashamed to say that this still rings true. In looking ahead to summer festivals, the DRESS still stands as an essential festival outfit in and of itself–giving us freedom and flirtiness and all the feels. With jeans, (or not) a light jacket, boots or kicks, we’re loving midi and maxis this year.

OR A TOTAL BOHO FESTIVAL LOOK

Why it works: Cohesive, photo-ready styling with handcrafted accents for a classic bohemian festival look.
Styling tips: Mix textures (crochet, suede, fringe) and layer jewelry.

EASY WINNER: MIX-AND-MATCH FESTIVAL SETS

Why it works: Breathable fabrics, lightweight packing, and instant coordination.
Styling tips: Pack 2–3 sets and swap bottoms/tops to multiply outfit options.

One thing I tend to equate festivals with is HEAT. So comfort and function are just as essential as what an outfit actually looks like. To provide breathability AND extra room in my luggage, I always consider cotton or linen set dressing. Bring 2 or 3 and you can mix/match for extra versatility in your outfitting, sparking color or pattern interest, and swapping between pants/skirts/shorts to hit the right note.

WEAVING YOUR OWN STORY: CROCHET/NET ACCENTS

Why it works: Unique pieces give your outfit a curated look and will have the ‘where’d you get that?’ questions flowing.
Styling tips: Use as overlay pieces for extra dimension or accessories to add texture and breathability.

Every outfit tells a story, right? Enrich the narrative with accessories that boast a bit of handcrafted elements. Very FP, very festival attire.

ROLL WITH IT: STUDS ARE HAVING A MOMENT

Why it works: Can easily add in touches of stud for a juxtaposition of edgy and femme, or go all in for an cooler festival ‘fit.
Styling tips: Add studded belts, boots, or bags for a little bit of edge and durability where you need it most.

Long live rock. And its signature studs.

BE A GOOD SPORT: ATHLETIC TOUCHES

Why it works: Festivals are step-heavy; sport-tinged pieces keep you comfortable while you’re moving–and grooving.
Styling tips: Athletic shorts, striped socks, and functional sneakers.

You can bring your A-game this festival season via incorporating sport-tinged accents into your wardrobe. I mean, truth be told, you’ll probably clock a good 20K+ steps each day, so there’s good reason for it. Some of our favorite pieces–cute athletic shorts, striped socks, fun and functional sneakers.

A FESTIVAL FAVE: LOW-RISE JEANS, AND SHORTS

Why it works: Small tops with higher-volume bottoms or low-rise denim for a modern throwback.

Revisiting some of our favorite celeb looks from a very famous California desert festival, it’s no surprise that tees/tanks and jeans/shorts took center stage. Honoring this year’s trend of little tops and bigger bottoms, we’re looking to all things low-rise to maximize that pairing. Or, conversely, forgiving tops with teeny bottoms. We love the dichotomy that such a simple outfit formula can provide!

THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR DANCIN’

Styling tips: Choose comfortable boots with weather-friendly finishes and fun details like fringe or buckles.

Though they may be part and parcel of a very quintessential festival boho uniform, boots are probably the most practical shoe you can wear this year. Comfortable and with added protection from the elements (and nature’s plethora of mosquitoes, etc.) some of our favorite festival footwear boasts fun vintage details like fringe, buckles and heritage finishes, along with rain-friendly wear (if need be).

AND DON’T FORGET YOUR FESTIVAL BEAUTY BITS

Why it works: Bring signature scent, SPF, and compact products that won’t leak.
Tips: Use travel-size containers and a small clear pouch for easy access.

Sometimes I tend to forego toting some (that’s a big some) of my beauty products because I assume I’ll find them at my destination, and minimize the risk of something spilling into the contents of my luggage. Until I remember that I very much like to SMELL and DO beauty differently than most folks. The misfit who I am and love renders herself unique across all categories. So to carry my signature scent, beauty marks, and glowy skin from one stage to another… to not bring these necessaries is a non-starter.

LAST-BUT-NOT-LEAST JEWELRY STACKS

Styling tips: Layer necklaces, bracelets, rings, and anklets for sunlight-friendly sparkle.

Whether minimalist or maximalist in practice (I waver between the two, but def leaning more chunky these days), jewelry stacking is a timeless and effortless art. And at a music festival, the more the merrier it seems. If you’re going the sandal route this season, there is no limit to the amount of toe rings and anklets you can show off. Otherwise, layers upon layers of bracelets, necklaces, and/or bodychains are most welcome and will see you absolutely shining in both sunlight and stage lights.
