I TRIED IT
rms Lipnights Overnight Lip Mask
By: Allie White
Because lips need their beauty sleep, too.
A few days ago, my five-year-old’s eyes got huge while she let out a yawn. When her display of utter exhaustion at being a toddler was over, she turned to me and said, “MOMMY! When I open my mouth big like this [dramatically reenacts mouth shape of a yawn] the sides of my mouth break! My lips feel like they’re cracking up!”
As much as I’d like to believe this meant her mouth was laughing at something hilarious, I knew what she was getting at. Whether it’s genetics, dry artificial heat, or our shared trait of constantly and unconsciously licking our lips, both of us regularly suffer from dry, cracked lips in the winter.
Luckily, I’m a bit of a lip balm hoarder and so, when I stopped smiling at the cute/insane thing my kid had said, I introduced her to my Bag o’ Balms and encouraged her to pick one. (Start ‘em young!) Like any good five-year-old, she hemmed and hawed for what felt like a literal century and then, to my utter shock, reached for a small, unassuming blue tube with a little white cap instead of the big pink pot I’d assumed she’d go for immediately.
“Good choice,” I said, introducing her to my current favorite lip treatment while internally saying a little prayer that she wouldn’t co-opt it as her own. “Oooh, I like this lip goop!” she beamed a few minutes later as she contorted her mouth around, testing its efficacy.
The lip goop in question? Lipnights Overnight Lip Mask from good-for-you, OG-clean line, rms Beauty.
As its name implies, the Lipnights Overnight Lip Mask is an overnight treatment balm that works while you snooze. The concept of an overnight lip treatment isn’t new, but what sets this stuff apart from its sisters is the mask’s ability to truly dive deep into the layers and layers of skin that make up your lips.

"Unlike a lot of other lip treatments and balms that just kind of sit on top of your lips until you accidentally wipe them off, Lipnights triggers an almost quicksand-like effect when applied."
After applying, the balm almost immediately starts to sink in — maybe it’s psychosomatic, but I swear I can feel it gently being absorbed by my extremely thirsty lips. If I’m using it as an overnight treatment, I wake up with my standard-issue terrible breath and crazy hair but damn if my lips aren’t supremely hydrated, soothed, and maybe even a little plumper than before. (You can, of course, use Lipnights while not sleeping — dealer’s choice! — and it works beautifully as a daytime lip prep before you apply lipstick. Just wipe off the excess after 15 minutes before applying color.)
Taking a look at the ingredient list, it’s no surprise: this untinted mask is infused with the who’s who of moisture-rich botanicals. Cocoa and shea butters combine to form a powerhouse base, while sunflower, jojoba, and chamomile oils work overtime to deliver hydration. Kakadu plum seed oil assists with a hit of vitamin c to increase collagen production and heal cracks, while pomegranate extracts and peptides give a little plumping oomph.
If the magical ingredients weren’t enough to sell you, consider the subtle scent of vanilla bean extract and chamomile oil that only serve to enhance the experience of applying this thick, melty, decadent balm.
No tingling, no stinging, no mint-induced burning sensation. No. Nonsense. Just straight-up lip nourishment in a tiny tube that I’ll be restocking ASAP so I have plenty of backups when mine inevitably disappears at the hands of a toddler.
