I Discovered A “New Old” Comfort, And I’m Not Letting Go

By: Carrie Yotter

My Emus go with me everywhere.

Though I was never one to don heels and a mini, my usual wardrobe of Western boots and denim-on-denim (I know – don’t judge) wasn’t necessarily a “comfortable” one. It was instead a uniform, a ‘fit that sat familiarly against my skin… I liked how it all looked, how I felt wearing it, and that was that.
Until two years ago, deep in pandemic land, when I was lounging on the couch and watching TV. My partner glanced at me from across the living room and said, “HOW are you still wearing your jeans and boots right now? BOOTS?”

And, you know, I didn’t necessarily have a good answer for her. I’d never considered otherwise. It was just…what I did. What I wore. Pretty much every day.
So, thanks to a stubborn Aries rising sign, I ignored her. But a few nights later I decided I was going to change out of my uniform just for the heck of it.

I grabbed two things that had never really seen the light of day: a gifted pair of Emu Stingers, and a sweatsuit.

Here was my immediate takeaway:

What have I been depriving myself of all these years?
This is…fantastic. Revelatory. A fashion(less?) epiphany.
My Emus became my new calling card.

And the thing of it is, my slip-on Emu boots didn’t just cushion my feet whilst taking in a name-your-Netflix-fave. They became a true power player in my everywhere. Starting with quick jaunts to the grocery store. I mean, how cool to no longer announce my arrival in the vegetable aisle via clickety heels? I now glided (well, sometimes shuffled) around. My feet as light as clouds. And warm, though not overly so. Before long, my COMFORTABLE boots took the place of the beat-up but much-loved Western boots I always wore. I wore them without much thought – to the movies, to the bar, to holiday get-togethers – because they kind of go with everything, and don’t require the effort of styling up. Unless you want to.

Now, Emu Stingers look very much like another uber famous Australian footwear brand. And they’re born from the same general inspiration – 60s surfer style. But Emu, founded in 1994, prided itself on using only natural and biodegradable materials, and were the first of their kind to produce a water-resistant upper.

I guess what I’m trying to say is – the statement that I’m making with my Stingers is actually a non-statement. They keep my feet warm and comfy and my spirits lofty. Plus, their durability ensures that I’ll have them in my rotation for a long time.

And really, what’s better than that?
