Why I’m Reclaiming Boyfriend Jeans As My Own

It’s a sentiment that signifies when a woman wants to incorporate menswear-inspired pieces into her outfitting; in this case, boyfriend jeans. I mean, it makes sense – a silhouette designed and worn to generally serve the men of this world, a relaxed, loose-legged-and anything but ill-fitting jean. High-, mid-, or low-rise. One might (and does) infer that, when we want to wear them, we’re going to borrow from said “boys.” But, isn’t it time that we just own this jean? It, too, works with our infinitely great body shape/s, and allows for lots of versatility in crafting our looks. And…it’s denim. To me, we’re well past the point of having to borrow – maybe we’re ready to call it something else entirely. Something that unites us instead of separates us via XX vs XY GENES. GENES/JEANS FOR ALL! Best Friend jeans, anyone?

IT’S A CLASSIC

When you think of BF jeans (boyfriend or best friend!), you probably conjure up something exactly like the Deep Trance (whether you know it or not). Everything about these rigid-ish We The Free jeans is effortless – a loose barrel leg, mid-rise waist (but can be worn higher or lower depending on your preference). With a button-fly closure and ankle-length inseam, the Deep Trance is the quintessential must-have, wear-anytime pair.

Two words: the barrel. Guaranteed to stoke some serious opinions. But, the Moxie’s pull-on feature makes this denim a little more forgiving. Like, lounge-meet-jeans. A low-rise with tapered legs, the Moxie’s patch (and select paint-splattered) detailing can make an elevated look feel a bit more “real.” Or you can go full-easy and pair this back with a tee and well, pretty much any shoe you want. Personally, I go clog or kick.

Truth be told, most of my BF jeans hit just around my ankle. It’s an easy inseam and makes grabbing any shoe within reach a good choice. But, there is a time and place for denim that puddles. For me, that means now. The Palmer gives my legs a longer look, and I love the subtle 70s nod that comes with that. Plus, the peekaboo toe is fun. What is ALSO and equally great about this style – if you’re not feeling the puddle (rain, a more casual look, you want to show off that anklet you covet), the Palmer makes cool cuffs a cinch. Literally.

.Ok, I know the harem waistband might not be for everyone. But trust – a jean as lightweight as the Lunan is about as comfortable as you might find. This is instant cool. Worthy of a winning beach-inspired look, this cropped, sort-of 80s-inspired jean can go any which way, especially for a quick change from couch to cocktails and back again.
