How To Clean + Care For This Season’s Essential Fabric: Suede

By: Jules Boyd

Ready to be “suede”?

Picture this: you’ve just found “it.” You know, that suede leather jacket, shoe, or bag you’ve been eyeing up for a while? Well, you just found it — and it’s in your size. Soft, velvety suede. The perfect silhouette. And then…you look at the care tag.

In dark, looming letters, it reads: Professional Leather Clean Only.

The world collapses around you. The jacket of your dreams now requires more care than you anticipated. You muse to yourself, “Is it worth it? Will I take care of this dream jacket?” Well, I’m here to say, yes, you will. And here’s how. Learn more about caring for suede jackets—and other suede pieces—in this guide.

CLEANING AND CARING FOR NATURAL SUEDE

Natural leather lovers, this is for you. Let’s start with, well, the jacket. Take our favorite Nimbus Suede Jacket or chore-inspired Annalise Suede Jacket for your 100% leather picks. Both require a professional cleaning — and, let me just say, you should definitely invest in a professional service every once in a while to preserve your special pieces — but there are a few methods and tricks you can do to clean and care for your suede jackets, shoes, and bags in the meantime (for a fraction of the cost).

THE HOUSEHOLD FIX

Something as simple as a pencil eraser is the perfect quick fix for small stains, scuff marks, and any other minor imperfections; plus, it doesn’t damage the fabric! A pencil or eraser is also super handy to keep in your purse or work bag should you need to touch up your suede jacket or bag on the go.

THE PANTRY STAPLE

I know most of you probably keep some rubbing alcohol or white vinegar handy, but did you know that both can be used as a cleaning solution for suede? Just pour a little on a soft cloth and dab into any potential stains — and don’t worry if the color changes, it’ll go back to normal once it dries down!

THE EXTRA LAYER OF PROTECTION

To nip any potential imperfections in the bud, try spraying a suede cleaner occasionally on your pieces. This helps to prevent any water damage, stains, or cuffs. Plus, it preserves the quality of your suede so you can love it for longer!

THE BRUSH BFFs

Another tool that might be worth picking up is either a suede or dry brush. Suede brushes have a wire side for removing dirt and mud (perfect for cleaning suede boots or sneakers!), and a rubber side for buffing. Start with the soft side and then move on to the hard — viola! Good-as-new suede. A dry brush is helpful to remove any outer dirt or scuffing before using other methods to spot clean.

GO VEGAN: HOW TO CLEAN VEGAN SUEDE

We wouldn’t leave our vegan friends hanging! Our Fringe Out Vegan Suede Jacket and Hera Vegan Suede Jacket are a must-buy, and along with the tips above, you can also use a mild soap and water solution to spot-treat, use cornstarch to remove grease stains, or gently file a stain with an emery board. Who knew cleaning could be so easy, and with stuff you can find in your closet?

SUEDE PROTECTION FAQs

Can I Use Leather Cleaner on Suede?
Unfortunately, no. While suede is a type of leather, both materials require distinct care and cleaning products. Leather cleaners can compromise the delicate texture of suede. Instead, opt for cleaners or erasers specifically designed for suede. Your suede pieces will appreciate the specialized treatment.

Is Suede Leather Waterproof?
Suede, similar to its leather counterpart, is not waterproof. Suede requires careful handling when exposed to moisture, as even a small amount of water can cause damage. To protect your suede pieces from environmental elements, apply a high-quality suede protector spray. This offers essential protection while maintaining its appearance.

What Should I Avoid Using on Suede?
When caring for suede, certain substances should be avoided. Water can leave unsightly marks, and harsh chemicals or leather cleaners can be detrimental. Instead, treat your suede with a soft-bristled brush or a dedicated suede cleaner. Your suede deserves exceptional care.

There you have it! We hope you’re just as easily “suede” as we were to pull the trigger on that special piece.

Xoxo, FP
