To the untrained eye, my bathroom looks like a small beauty supply store. Did I immediately add four wall shelves when I moved in to house the overflow of products that wouldn’t fit in my medicine cabinet? Yes, I did. Do I also have a freestanding cabinet in a weird little corner for additional product storage? Yes, I do. Is half the linen closet in the hallway dedicated to even more storage? Yes, it is. Can you also find boxes of products hiding under my bed in organized chaos? Yes, you can.
Part of the problem — and yes, this is a problem, one I fully admit to and own — is that I like trying new things and one of the perks of writing about self-care is that I simply must try everything. But the other part of the problem lies in the fact that testing so much stuff means that I rarely get to finish any of it. Once I’m convinced of a product’s efficacy (or decide it’s a “no” from me), I move onto the next.
So when I do get to the bottom of a bottle, it’s a big deal. It means I like something so much that it’s earned a prime spot in my medicine cabinet and won’t be relegated to the “put this under the bed” or “pass to a friend” storage spots in the house. It also means I’m more likely to recommend and repurchase, that it’s earned a space in my Forever RoutineTM.
You won’t catch me on social holding up a bag of all the empty bottles I’ve saved and walking you through each one (though if you ask really nicely…), but reflecting on empties is a love letter to the products we’ve enjoyed so much we’re both happy and sad when we hit bottom. To honor our empties, here’s a roundup of some of the things y’all have loved so much that they’re consistently top-rated and top-sellers, and the rankings don’t look like they’re budging anytime soon.

Filling Up On “Empties”
By: Allie White
An ode to the beauty products we’ve enjoyed to the last drop.
COMMON HEIR RETINOL CAPSULE SERUM
Retinol is a skin superhero, but it can be tricky to figure out the right way to use it for your skin. Luckily, Common Heir’s cutie little capsules are a genius solution: they’re single-use doses that take the guesswork out of application. Each biodegradable capsule houses a potent mix of 0.2% retinol blend, soothing aloe and hydrating squalane to minimize redness and peeling. Not only do they ensure proper dosage, but they also keep whatever product you haven't used yet airtight and free of light exposure, helping every capsule to maintain peak effectiveness.
LANOLIPS’ ORIGINAL LANOSTICK
Lanolips has been a cult fave brand for a while but their Lanostick has emerged as the cultiest of all their cult products, and for good reason. A deeply nourishing balm, dry lips are no match for its ultra-moisturizing lanolin, vitamins, antioxidants, and candelilla wax, which naturally seals in all that goodness for an extra layer of protection. And unlike Lanolip’s other darling — Multipurpose Balm — the Lanostick is hands-free aka less germ-y.
VACATION® SHIMMER OIL SPF 30
Summer may be on its way out but given the high praise (and high sales) this shimmer oil constantly receives, it seems like we’re all oiling for the season we want, not necessarily the season we have. The diamond powder and luminous pigments combine to deliver a subtle, buildable glow while meadowfoam seed and marula oils leave skin baby soft and smooth. Oh, and it’s got broad spectrum UV protection to boot. No wonder this multitasking wonder oil is constantly being used to the point of needing to be turned 180-degrees upside down and smacked to get those final, precious drops out.
YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE SUPERFOOD ANTIOXIDANT GEL CLEANSER
Ask anyone what their least-thought-about product is and chances are high they’ll say cleanser. After all, it sits on skin for the least amount of time so why care about what you’re using? But when YTTP introduced their Superfood Antioxidant Gel Cleanser a few years ago, skin people sat up and listened. The refreshing gel formula harnesses the power of kale, spinach and green tea to remove impurities and makeup while also repairing and replenishing the skin’s natural moisture barrier. It foams without drying, cleanses without stripping, and generally leaves all skin types clean, soft and balanced. Oh, and you’ll never actually have a recyclable empty: the glass container is refillable.
EMBRYOLISSE LAIT CRÈME CONCENTRÉ
When something has been a fan favorite and best-seller for nearly 75 years, there’s a good reason. And while we love all things French pharmacy, the Lait Crème Concentré from Embryolisse has earned its rightful spot at the tippy top of the list of ride-or-die, have-three-extras-on-standby, absolutely-can’t-live-without-it self-care products. It’s rich. It’s creamy. It’s also somehow totally suitable for all skin types. Nourishing and hydrating without being heavy or greasy, the combination of fatty acids, beeswax and vitamins is nothing short of French sorcery.
