The (Sometimes Annoying) Sound of Spring Is Back
By: Carrie Yotter
Flip flops are “hear” to stay.
I was writing a friend about this story before I even knew what I wanted to say. (Spoiler – I’m a bit older than I’d want to admit.) Except that I knew I was going to talk about flip flops. And that my first memory of them was during our first annual warm-weather pilgrimage to the local drugstore, where we could pick from a few basic colors in the sizes they had. And I would no doubt have to anticipate the pain between my first 2 toes needing a good month or 2 of “adjusting” before I and my siblings and friends could tear off in our flip flops for rest of the summer.
Thankfully, we have infinitely more and better “floptions” these days. But before I can even get to that very real, literally raw childhood memory of breaking my flip flops in, there is…
THE SOUND.
No matter where you’re testing them out, even if you’re already committed and walking oh so assuredly toward your friends for a dinner date… that smack of the heel, crack of the “flip”... how does one even describe it? The sound can be annoying, at best. Ushering in “HELLO SPRING” like nails on a chalkboard.
I guess most of us suck up the click-clack and accept it as part of the uniform AND soundtrack of spring/summer. Which would we should, honestly. Wet boardwalks, muggy morning dog strolls, brisk grocery store pit stops…no one is immune.
But more importantly – flip flops are convenient. They go with pretty much everything, even awkward bottoms. You can sport an OG rubber/foam pair or a more elegant leather version. They are to sunny days what a swimsuit is to a pool – essential. Here are five of our fave pairs of flip flops:

HAVAIANAS FLIP FLOPS: A SURE BET
There’s no reason to mess with a classic. At $26 a pair, you can probably afford to have a few of these Havaianas flip flops in your warm-weather rotation, to ensure you’re mixing and matching your spring and summer color palettes in the best way.
I REALLY love the subtle sporty striped midsole detail. And the Brazilian flag embellishing the thong.

AND, HAVAIANAS JUST FOR FP
So, there’s classic. And then there’s a subtle step up, designed just for Free People…
Maybe the striped midsole of the OG flip flop is a little cute. Maybe you want to wear these from the beach to dinner and need a touch of refinement to your flip flop? If that’s possible?
Havaianas granted your wish. The square toe does a bit more than the classic, but nothing less. To give your feet, your look, a really clean edge before life takes you on another journey.
JEFFREY CAMPBELL: A SLIGHTLY ELEVATED FLIP FLOP
Leave it to Jeffrey Campbell to make a flip flop like this… look like a flip flop like this?
Constructed from PVC, the Darcie is a super budget-friendly, very versatile style for upping your spring/summer look. TBH, I was sold on the cushioned footbed WHICH did not create unfavorable noise while walking.
UPPING YOUR FLIP FLOP GAME
Now we’re moving out of a work-and-play assortment and focusing on more sophisticated, clean summer outfitting. With the Sona, you’ve got a sleek flat heel adorned with subtle metal studding around the toe of the leather footbed. Still perfectly acceptable for a poolside or lazy beach day, but you and your BFFs won’t think twice about seeing these move onto a bistro, a bar, a dancefloor…
A HOLE-IN-ONE SANDAL
Maybe at some point a flip flop is called a “thong sandal” for posterity…
In any case, the Gia rounds out this list as our most luxury pair, but at $98, they still leave you with enough for a nightcap and Uber fare to your next destination. These give you the “best of the best” in a flip flop – a square toe, micro stud detailing, a slight heel, full leather fabrication. The grommets on the thong make for a most perfect accent.
These are coming with me on every trip this summer.
