WE TRIED IT:

Squash

By: Elizabeth Rakow

Why squash is the best game you’ve never heard of. Team FP gets the chance to learn from a top-ranked pro.

Strategy, physicality, agility. These are the words that come to mind when thinking about the game Forbes Magazine voted as the number one healthiest sport, a game that pros and novices alike gathered to play on a Tuesday in August at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia. From its health benefits to its intense use of strategy, squash is a well-rounded game that’s fun for all skill levels. Not to mention, our team had the privilege of learning from seasoned pro and top-ranked squash player, Olivia Weaver.

So we thought…why not give it a try?

WHAT WE DID + WHERE WE WENT

Squash is a racquet sport played by two players in a four-walled court with a small rubber ball. Like most court sports, game play starts with a serve and then goes on with a back-and-forth rally that continues until one player fails to return the ball. Unlike most court sports, the rally in squash works by hitting the ball against the four walls.

The ball must be served above the tin (a high metal strip at the bottom of the front wall, acting as the lowest boundary for a valid shot) and below the out line (a line at the top of the front wall that extends along the side and back walls, acting as the “out of bounds” marker). The ball can strike the side or back walls at any time, as long as it hits below the out line and above the tin.

The ball can bounce only once on the floor before a hit is returned and players are free to move anywhere on the court. A rally is won when one opponent fails to return the ball before the second bounce, hits the ball out of bounds, or interferes with the other opponent’s shot.

We got to try our hand at squash at the Artem Specter Center in Philadelphia, PA. The Specter Center is the world’s preeminent squash facility, serving as the national center and a cornerstone for the US Squash Community Affiliate Network.

ALL ABOUT OLIVIA WEAVER

A Philly native who took time out of her busy schedule to show us the basics of squash, Olivia Weaver is a four-time All-American squash player and one of the top 10 players in the world (yes, seriously). Not only were we blown away that she’d be willing to lend her expertise to a group that didn’t even know the basics of her beloved sport, but we were equally amazed at her patience, kindness, and cool-meets-calm demeanor.

“It feels really special to be back in Philly,” Olivia said, “It’s where I grew up, where I first picked up a squash racket, and now it’s also the home of the U.S. National Training Center. So teaching Free People Movement’s team the basics here feels full-circle.”

Weaver, who was part of the first United States team to reach the final of the 2022 Women's World Team Squash Championships, considers squash to be the best kept secret in the world of sports. “It’s one of the best workouts you’ll ever have, but it doesn’t feel like a workout because you’re too busy trying to outsmart your opponent and chase the ball down,” she continued, “It’s fast, it’s creative, and it’s social—you can play at any level and still get a great game.” Weaver’s enthusiasm for squash came through at every turn.

From her positive demeanor when showing us the boundary lines to her genuine encouragement when we went up against her in a game of King’s Court (she definitely let a few of us get a point here and there), her love for the game is infectious, so much so that a few of us came away wanting to try squash on our own time.

“It was really cool to try something new,” said FP team member Jamie, “I had never played or even heard of this before, so it was really exciting and interesting to try it.”

In December 2024, Weaver helped the United States win the silver medal at the 2024 Women's World Team Squash Championships and won her 10th PSA title just months later. Her success in the sport is nothing short of admirable and her desire to spread her love of the game? Well, it made for a really fun and inspiring We Tried It.

“What I love most about squash is the people—everyone’s enthusiastic, full of personality, and playing becomes as much about meeting people and sharing laughs as it is about the game or getting in your workout. Plus, it’s about to be in the 2028 Olympics, so now is the perfect time to hop on board and get involved!”

WHAT WE WORE

We kept it court-sport classic for our day of trying squash. The Swing of Things Skortsie paired perfectly with the Knockout Tank for a functional fit, and the Smockin Hot Dress was a welcome addition and so easy to move in. Of course we loved the Carpe Diem Short with its ultra-comfortable built-in brief and the Tempo Ruched Long Sleeve which was super light and sweat-wicking, making it the perfect layer for a high-impact sport like squash. Special shoutout to the Run For The Hills Short for having just enough stretch for easy movement all over the squash court.

WHAT WE LEARNED + HOW WE MOVED

We started with some simple warm-ups to get our bodies moving before taking to the courts in small groups and learning the basics of swinging the racket, chasing the ball, and the ongoing mental game of outsmarting your opponent. The main thing Olivia made sure we understood? It’s all about the T!
In squash, the "T" is a tactical position in the center of the court, one that skilled players try to return to after every shot to maintain a balanced spot in order to be in the best possible position to hit the opponent’s next shot and conversely, control the rally and have a better chance of winning the game.

“The beauty of squash is that there’s no one “right” way to play—it’s problem-solving, fitness, and fun all in one.”
“Squash is a sport that looks intense, but once you get out there and start moving, it’s a total blast and one of the best workouts there is!”
Sticking To The T
Here were some of the other squash superlatives we took away from our day on the squash court:

-It’s All-Weather:
With a change in season right around the corner, it was nice to be reminded of a game that can be played all year long. Indoor squash courts are convenient and comfortable, offering a great option for staying active and healthy during the colder months.

-It’s Approachable
Squash is a sport that has a pretty low barrier to entry. Age, ability, and fitness level have no true bearing on whether or not you can play. While the sport itself is high impact, the level of intensity is totally up to you. “If you’re just starting out, you can even try Squash57, which uses a slightly bigger and bouncier ball than the one advanced players use—look it up, it’s a fun way to get started.” Olivia added. “My only real tip is: keep moving, laugh a lot, and don’t worry about being perfect. The game will surprise you in the best way.”

-It’s Fitness Meets Fun
Squash is a high-intensity sport that involves short bursts of activity followed by brief rest periods, similar to a HIIT workout but with lots of distraction built in. You’re so busy thinking about your next move and trying to outsmart your opponent that you almost don’t notice how much you’re moving, changing direction, and accelerating. Not to mention, the constant swinging of the racket is helping you build strong arm and shoulder muscles, while the squatting and reaching is helping you work your glutes. Seriously, some of us were so sore the next day and in the moment, didn’t even feel like we were doing a hard workout.
Our final feeling? Squash is the best game you’ve never heard of. You can come as you are, you can play for under an hour and still feel like you got a workout in, and you can bring a friend and try something new together. Olivia said it best, “It’s so important to try new sports as an adult! You don’t have to be perfect or compete at a high level—it’s really about enjoying movement again and giving yourself permission to play.”
