These jeans just won Summer 2021...and beyond.

There’s something magnetic happening with one particularly chill pair of jeans…

I got in touch with three stylists from NYC to LA, giving each an identical selection of nine different denim styles. Slim, low slung, overalls, coveralls, extra wide, cropped, destroyed, and on, and on. No stylist consulted the other. And yet, there was only one pair that every. person. chose.

And here’s where I admit that when presented with that list before ever speaking to the stylists (and never revealing my pick to them), I singled out the same one.

What exactly is this universally attractive cut?

First, a word from our stylists.

“Skaters always rock the best jeans,” says Donté McGuine, who splits time on both coasts working for projects like a campaign featuring model-turned-actress Omahyra, or crafting looks for hip hop artist Vic Mensa. He shares Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoe as denim inspo, and his favorite shape of 2021 is an oversized, raver-y, “cool and vibey” silhouette. “My personal denim philosophy is to just ‘own it.’”

“Love a vintage inspired shape with an updated fit,” says Los Angeles-based Victoria de la Fuente, who I once tagged along with on a Nylon Mexico shoot and now consults for denim line Pistola. She’s also riding the skater jean wave. “Finding the perfect pair of jeans is like dating, it can be a tedious process but when you find the one, it’s all worth it,” she jokes, adding Cindy Crawford and Zoe Kravitz to her mood board.

New York’s Emily Sanchez, who works with actors like Claire Danes and Kiera Allen, is equally down for a relaxed silhouette. “I’m loving seeing how everyone styles baggy and loose jeans,” she admits. “It’s also so amazing how flattering and cool they look on everyone.” She takes cues from the city’s street style stars, with a nod to the “puddly denim look from the “Driver’s License” video by Olivia Rodrigo.”

Most would call this look a Canadian Tuxedo because of the denim on denim. However, this is very Americana. It very much gives Cindy Crawford 90s Pepsi commercial vibes, especially when you remove the denim jacket and are left with a simple white tank — even more effortless and chic. Pairing it with a nice heritage boot adds that final touch of Americana, and adding a different texture or imitation skin also edges this up. The retro denim basically works in any setting, whether that be the grocery store, mall, sports game, beach, etc. This is a classic that will never fail you.

I love an oversized 90s pair of jeans — blame it on my raver days back in Peru. Bringing it to 2021, I think there’s something nonchalant about the shape that’s super easy to wear. Layered with a cropped top and tie dyed, oversized shirt, it works whether vintage shopping on the weekend (with a reusable fit-everything tote bag) or catching up with friends in Venice for drinks. Love that when you pair it with chunky clogs, it makes your legs appear doubly long — which is always a plus for me.

These jeans are just the right mix of baggy, distressed, and high waisted. I really love a baggy straight leg that almost hits the floor — it’s just super irreverent and cool and feels like a great transition back into structured denim. They will pair perfectly with a boho white top or a crochet bodysuit and natural stone statement jewelry to add some color and texture. I also love this little mule for a bit of comfort and height, but a sneaker would be just as cool!
