Swingy velvet jacket with high-low ruffle hem and long sleeves. Delicate chiffon lining that peeks out the bottom. Hip pockets.
A real Beauty
I will agree with other reviews that the overall jacket style runs large, but that is to be expected in a "swing" jacket. By definition a "swing" shaped item of clothing has extra material to make it "swing". It is a beautiful addition to my wardrobe. I am also confused by the reviews stating it is not true red or is too orange. The jacket comes in two colors; rust and black. Rust is in the orange family so it will be more orange than red. That said, it is beautiful in both colors.
I was excited about this duster mainly because of its color for this winter in Michigan. I have another velvet duster from FP that I love and the color was right on. However, this color seemed to have to much orange tone for me. It is flowy everywhere except the arms, which were tight. Light weight. I also didn't care for the scallops in person. Sadly returned.
Too tight on the arms and back :(
This coat is absolutely beautiful, however, there is not enough room for the arms, unless you have super skinny arms. Also too small across the upper back / shoulders area. Not available at this moment in large. So dissapointed, I have to return it. :( so sad.
Beautiful jacket, poor execution.
I bought this Jacket first in black size medium, had to send it back because the arm area was super tight. Got one in large, I really wanted to keep it but I had to send it back for the same reason, there was no room to move the arms. This keep happen again and again with Free people, they have amazing design but the execution, the fabrics and measurements are not as expected. I think this was my last purchase.
I decided to write a review, since my experience has been different from that of the previous two reviewers. I am 5'3", 32A, size 24/00 in bottoms and purchased the Black in XS. I actually did not feel overwhelmed by this duster/jacket and think it is very lovely and flattering. It does hit about mid-calf and the inside is "fully lined" with the chiffon material and looks very nice. Honestly, because there is no spandex or stretch in the material, I was debating on sizing up to a S. The XS fits perfectly, but gets a little "tight" along the back, if I move my arms in a reaching or hugging motion. I decided to keep the XS, partially because the shoulders and everything fit perfectly and partially because I didn't want the hassle of trying a S and returning one or the other, since they aren't in stock in my local store. So, I would say this runs TTS but with no stretch.
I was excited to try this one as the pictures made it seem to beautiful, and it IS! This is a piece that does not disappoint! The velvet is a beautiful one, very soft and luxurious, and it does have a lining, so it can be worn well into fall as an outter garment. I figure once it gets really cold I can still wear it as a beautiful alternative to a long sweater. It *is* a bit tight in the upper arms, around the biceps, as has already been mentioned. I normally wear XS to Small in FP and opted for the size Small in this, only because the size Medium was far too big in the shoulders. But be prepared, because this isn't an item you can wear a bulky sweater or even thicker long-sleeved shirts underneath. Also, I got the rust color, but be warned: it's not the cherry red it appears in the on-line photos, it really is a rust color- more of a muted orange-based red than a lipstick red. This will be wonderful with many of the long skirts and dresses I like to wear in the chillier Autumnal weather!
I bought the rust color and am very pleased. It does run a little big but not overly so. I thought the arms fit fine. The fabric is beautiful. It is soft and flows. I think it is very feminine looking. It looks great with jeans or over a little black dress. I am going to wear it to work with black dress pants and a pretty blouse. I was very happy with my purchase. I may also get it in the black.
Really roomy and no structure
I tried this on in the black XS, which is my typical FP size. At 5’3” tall and a size 2/4 the jacket was huge on me with the exception of the arms which were a little tight in the biceps. It hit me at about mid-calf, which would have been fine except that is was large everywhere else. From the back it looked normal but on the front and side there was too much fabric so the draping in the front completely covered me. Interestingly enough the arms were the right length. The jacket looks just like it does online and it’s a soft velvet with the chiffon fabric at the bottom that adds a nice touch. With the lack of structure you need height to pull this jacket off along with a more fitted outfit. The black has a slight Phantom of he Opera feel to it as well partially from the styling but also the roominess on me. Finally, I didn’t think it was worth $198 due to the lack of styling. Aside from the chiffon there isn't much to this jacket other than a bunch of velvet fabric.
