The Zunis believe in six sacred directions: Above, North, East, South, West and Below. Each of the directions is associated with a color. The color blue is associated with West. Additionally, each color has an animal associated with it. There are two animal sets ? one represents healing and protection while the other represents hunting. The carved turquoise coyote beads found on the necklace represent hunting in the West. Each of the 15 beads is separated by hand-carved wampum beads made of shell and turquoise. The anchor bead, a turquoise eagle, represents the direction Above, is considered the guardian of the sky. The sterling silver cone-shaped ends are also carved and join together with a hook and double loop closure. Each coyote bead is 3/4 inch long and the eagle is a 1 inch square.
