FP asked the queen of the “shroom boom” 8 pressing questions on her new serum…
From contributor Arden Andrews.
You’ve likely heard that Moon Juice, aka Amanda Chantal Bacon’s cult-favorite wellness line, launched a new skin hero: Plump Jelly Hyaluronic Acid Serum. To get the inside scoop on what it is and how to use it, we tapped Chantal Bacon herself.
It’s been over ten years since she started the brand in Venice, California after opening up a juice shop. “I focused on pressing juices, making smoothies, and ringing people up,” says the founder. “It’s amazing to see where we’ve come from.” In the decade since, celebs from Zoe Kravitz to Gwyneth Paltrow have announced themselves as fans of the adaptogen-laced brand, and the internal (powders!) and external (skincare!) hits keep coming.
Like the rest of the world, the Moon Juice team has gone remote, and can be found all over the US, and mainly west coast, dreaming up new health and wellness solutions while sipping those power powders. “Brain Dusted lattes all around to keep us sharp and focused,” says Chantal Bacon. Interestingly, the new Plump Jelly Serum shares some key ingredients: “We actually have the same ingredients in Collagen Protect as an ingestible,” she says, namechecking Hyaluronic Acid. “It’s basically skincare you can drink.”

Of course, the new serum is not a snack (though your skin may say otherwise).”
Here, we’ve asked the queen of the “shroom boom” 8 pressing questions on Moon Juice’s new skincare addition, from how it layers with other skincare to where in the world those ingredients are harvested. Her answers below:
Moon Juice products always have a name that makes you get it — Acid Potion, SuperHair, Beauty Dust. For your Plump Jelly Serum, what did you want to convey?
With Plump Jelly, we wanted to convey the intense hydration and bounce that it delivers. It’s a jelly-like formula packed with humectants like hyaluronic acid and Silver Ear mushroom.
Were the ingredients harvested or chosen in any interesting or eco-thoughtful ways?
Yes, in everything we do, we’re committed to regenerative practices and sustainable wild-harvesting from seed to extract. We monitor the native plant population, hand harvest without disrupting the ecosystem, and never formulate with endangered plants. For Plump Jelly, our Reishi mushroom is sourced from California. Our ingestible mushroom extracts are made from organically grown mushrooms. They're grown on wood in their native country of China, in green houses, full of natural light and fresh air. (Never in labs or on unnatural substrates.) Our hot water extraction uses only the fruiting body — making it rich beta-glucans and triterpenoids.
Moon Juice was ahead of the shroom boom curve — what does snow mushroom do for skin in the new Plump Jelly serum?
There are many names – we call it Silver Ear mushroom. It’s a hydrating super-mushroom that can hold up to 500 times its weight in water. It also creates a flexible hydrating barrier on the skin to help minimize transepidermal water loss and support the skin barrier.

Are there any other star ingredients we should get the scoop on?
We added more shroom power with adaptogenic Reishi mushroom which helps to support the skin barrier and soothe redness.
Everyone wants hyaluronic acid in everything, they’re putting it on their skin, they’re eating it — what makes it special as an ingredient in the Plump Jelly Serum?
Hyaluronic Acid is known for its ability to hold up to 1000x its weight in water. It helps to bind water to skin for plumping hydration. For Plump Jelly we paired Hyaluronic Acid with PGA peptides to hydrate around cells, plus beet amino acid and Silver Ear mushroom to synergistically deliver water into cells and lock it in for elasticity and bounce. With different molecular weights, Hyaluronic and Silver Ear mushroom give hydration in the skin and on the surface of your skin.
A lot of consumers are doing their best to trim down their skincare steps — what place does the serum hold in a routine?
Serums are great because they are often made up of ingredients with smaller molecules that can penetrate the skin more easily than oil, giving them the ability to deliver potent ingredients to the skin. They can also act as a vehicle for antioxidants which help protect skin from signs of oxidative stress and accelerated aging.
Will it work for all skin types?
Plump Jelly is excellent for all skin types since all skin needs hydration. It’s beneficial for dry skin and skin with a compromised barrier.
What do you suggest for layering — does it still need to be topped with a moisturizer?
It depends on your skin and the season! I like to apply Plump Jelly to wet skin, to lock in hydration. I don’t always follow with a moisturizer, if my skin is super dry or needs more protection from the elements, I’ll top it with our collagen protection moisturizer, Cosmic Cream.
