With each passing holiday, my poor Mom gets a tiny bit more frustrated with me.

Mom: “What do you want this year?”

Me: “Nothing, really — I don’t need anything.”

Mom: “Oh c’mon! There must be something?”

Me: “I’ll think about it…” (which is code for — I’m not going to think about it)

Of course, because she’s a damn good Mom, I will be greeted in a few weeks with a warm hug and at least one “iffy” gift about which she was forced to make an executive decision.

When it comes to my stocking, however — there are no uncertainties. Because Mom hooks me up, without fail, with all of my basic beauty products. It might sound boring, but — even as a full-fledged adult, I will undoubtedly add water at least twice to my shampoo bottle before replacing it...literally finger-swipe every last drop of moisturizer from its tub. Because I don’t ever think about buying a new product until a few days after I’ve run out of it. Maybe it’s because I’m a “good to the last drop” kind of consumer; or, this is just part of who I am.

So Mom’s got my back (and neck, and face, and legs) at least once every year. Which is such a relief, honestly. As well as a simple, thoughtful, cost-effective token of care and affection.
