If you were to compare Free People today to Free People in, say, 1984 (the year we launched as a wholesale line), you might find it interesting to see that, at our heart, we are inherently the same.

Meaning that, in our nearly 40 years of business, the sensibilities that we observed, catered to, and nurtured then are still those that our community – you – expect from us each and every day.

At the time our founders discovered a need -- people wanted something a little different in their wardrobe. Something tangible, unexpected, playful and real. So many of our signature pieces featured these elements predominantly – colour, hand detailing, embellishment…sometimes all three.

You responded with great enthusiasm. At last! There was a place where you, lovers of craft, adventure, music, whimsy and creativity, could congregate. And shop. And feel confident in who you were and what you wore.

This mutual understanding and dedication has remained our hallmark ever since. And what led us to explore and play within the activewear realm, as so many of you (as well as our Free People staff) spend your days and nights in pursuit of fitness, wellness, and happiness. FP Movement was born of that endeavor, a philosophy that later incorporated beauty and wellness to provide additional support for those looking to achieve balance both inside and out.
