Consider it a smooth operator…

The thought of resting your head on a silk pillowcase, instead of your trusty cotton one, may sound a bit over-the-top, or even downright indulgent. You may even wonder if silk has any real beauty benefits, anyway, or if it’s just another marketing scam.

I’m here to let you know that, yes, a silk pillowcase is absolutely worth it. It’s the ultimate secret weapon to transform your beauty sleep.
The magic is in the material; the soft, slippery fabric works with you as you sleep, rather than against. It’s a smooth surface with very little friction, and it’s the friction from traditional pillowcases that cause creases in your skin. Translation: it won’t leave behind fine lines on your face. There’s also the moisture aspect. Cotton is more porous than silk, so traditional pillowcases suck moisture from your hair, while silk leaves your products right where it belongs: in your hair and on your face. This actually makes the skin-care products you spend 30 minutes layering on more effective.

If you’re anything like me, you tend to move around a little (okay, a lot) while you sleep. And all that moving around can do some serious damage to your hair: when you’re sleeping on a conventional cotton pillowcase, this can create aforementioned friction against your hair, increasing the possibilities of breakage. However, thanks to silk’s delicacy, your hair glides smoothly across its surface, so you’re less likely to wake up with dreaded bedhead, frizz, or flyways, regardless of your hair type or texture.

Here’s another fact about silk pillowcases: there’s a ton of them on the market, making it difficult to decipher the ones worth the money from the overpriced pieces of faux fabric. There are some brands — I won’t name names — who claim they are silk, but if you lean in, squint, and read the ingredients list, you’ll notice that while there’s a little bit of silk in the formula, there’s also other ingredients like cotton or polyester. Do your future self a favor and opt for a silk pillowcase (and, if you’re really feeling luxe, throw in a silk eye mask, too) that’s made with mulberry silk. It’s the best quality — it has longer, more uniform fibers which means two things: 1) the fabric is smoother, elevating your beauty sleep, and 2) that the fabric will last through more washes, making the price more than worth it.

After testing out the new Slip x Alice + Olivia Pure Silk Sleep Pillowcase and Mask, my beauty sleep went next-level. Not only did it feel like I was sleeping on a cloud, but I woke up with hair that looked just as good as when I left the salon. My skin looks less stressed than it typically does and I’m no longer dealing with those awkward pillow creases that would nestle into my skin. Plus, the mask helped me ease into my morning; rather than being bombarded with rays of sun, I could meet the day on my own accord.

Bottom line: yes, a silk pillowcase is worth it and you should consider making it a consistent part of your bedtime routine.
