BOXING 101: Trust Us, Heather Hardy's Workout Is A Real KO

A routine with Everlast-ing benefits…

A single-mom-turned-professional-boxer-and mixed-martial-artist, Heather Hardy won the World Boxing Organization’s Featherweight title in 2018, after having started her career only six years prior. It was quite possibly, according to Heather, “her ticket out of the struggle.” Today, with a host of impressive accolades under her belt (literally), she trains both curious and would-be contenders at her home away from home, Brooklyn’s Gleason’s Gym.

We took a few minutes to learn more about Heather’s roots, her motivation, and her curated-just-for-FP-Movement workout. Read on and, trust us, you’ll be glad you stepped in the ring with “The Heat.”

How did you discover boxing?
I was 28 years old, recently divorced and living with my sister and her son. We were two single moms not getting child support – I was the “dad” who went out and worked and she stayed home with the kids. There were times I had up to 6 jobs. They opened a small karate school in our neighborhood and my sister surprised me with a gift certificate -- she said I needed a hobby! She was tired of seeing me just work and complain at home. Within three weeks I had my first fight, and won. Haven’t been able to get me out of the ring since. Boxing signaled the first time in my life I felt like I was good at something.

What three things does boxing most afford you?
Boxing is a lifestyle for me. It’s my safe zone, my home. Being in the ring is the only time I feel like I’m in complete control.

How do you “get in your zone?”
I was born in my zone :) Fighting is who I am!

For this particular exercise, what can someone expect in terms of results? What muscles will be worked?
This workout is to get your heart rate up, and sweat! Everyone thinks boxing is all punches and upper body but it’s full body! Strong legs and footwork are so important and essential for a good fighter!

Any pro tips you can impart on someone new to boxing, even as part of a larger workout regimen?
Stick to the basics! Run for endurance! Don’t strength train too heavy! My boxing coach says when you go to the boxing gym it’s like being in school! If you’re not learning something new, or how to improve something you’re doing, then reevaluate!
