Artisan-made, sustainable, an homage to one of the world’s most mesmerizing places…
Since its inception in 2015, the team behind Free People’s Bali capsule – Carolyn and Paige – have made this vibrant Indonesian mecca a sort-of second home. It’s a place which they visit when they’re able to, to meet with a group of dedicated artisans with whom they weave nothing short of magic.
What’s notable – and key – to this permanent fixture in Free People’s assortment is the designers’ mission to keep things “in the family,” source materials/fabrics local to the areas in which they work, and nurture the art of hand-sewn and embellished garments. Which makes Bali a Care FP standout.
Carolyn and Paige were gracious enough to share a bit about their experience working in, and being constantly inspired by, Bali. Take a few minutes to read, learn, and enjoy along with us.
Why Bali?
Bali is such a special place! The artisans there specialize in hand embellishments, cutwork, hand-stamped batik printing, and handwoven ikat fabrics. The island is so small that a lot of things are done by hand or made on site simply out of necessity, and there is a rich history of doing so. Things definitely happen slower on the island, but it’s the ideal atmosphere for creating beautiful hand done pieces. We are so lucky to get to highlight their beautiful techniques and craftsmanship in our designs. Feels like we’re living a designer’s dream!
Can you tell us a little bit about Bali?
From the colorful, floral offerings that dot the walkways and roads, to the beaches and cliffs that host the most amazing sunset views, from the lush green rice fields to the scent of burning incense, it is truly a full sensory experience! As soon as we land in Bali, we immediately feel at home. There is such a beautifully serene energy, contrasted with the hustle and bustle of locals zooming around on motorbikes going about everyday life. There seem to be no rules, yet everyone maneuvers effortlessly – it’s a beautiful thing to witness.
How is Bali’s spirit reflected in the collection?
Bali is so rich in history and culture – we love learning a bit more each time we visit. Art is deeply woven into the spirit of the island, obvious in the traditional buildings and clothing. Also, color! Everywhere you look, from tropical fruits to the lush green landscapes and pastel sunsets.
Signature details/silhouettes/trims?
Bali specializes in traditional cutwork called “karawang,” hand embroidery, hand beading/sequining, leather, and hand crochet. So we often incorporate those details and fabrics throughout the collection. Our silhouettes tend to feel sensual and beachy, which make for an easy day-to-night transition. They are statement heirloom pieces that are meant to accompany you for years. We like to imagine the person wearing our pieces is daring and adventurous and isn’t afraid to stand out!
Tell us about your relationship with the artisans with whom you work. What methods/tools/skills do they employ?
It goes without saying that, each time we visit Bali, we’re so excited to see everyone – there are big hugs to go around when we do! They’ve become like our second family, one who we might not see for months at a time, so there’s always space reserved just for catching up. Muz and Evi are our primary point people, who ensure each garment looks beautiful from the inside out. They are experts at what they do, meaning: as we’re designing, we usually talk them through our sketches to collectively bring our crazy ideas to life (haha). That often includes introducing us to specialized artisans. With their guidance and help, we’ve done everything from adding a hand painted bird to a duster jacket back, hand painting a suede mini dress, and making a traditional wax batik printed pant.
There’s one artist in particular who draws up all of our cutwork and embroidery. He is so talented – he can literally draw what we’re describing to him on site, right in front of us. The end result is always incredible. We also work with a patternmaker who helps to bring our sketches to life. We’ve been working with her for so long that, at this point, she can almost read our mind 😊 .
And what makes this a sustainable collection?
Our pieces are made in a few very small family-owned factories, one of which is women-owned and operated. They specialize in hand embellishments, sequins, and beading. (If you’ve ever bought a fully sequined or beaded Bali dress, there’s a good chance it’s that very factory who had a literal hand in its creation). The other factory we work with specializes in hand done cutwork and embroidery, which sometimes takes several weeks to execute.
Because even the fabric printing is done by hand, production is sometimes delayed because that paint needs time to dry in the sun – and that doesn’t always work during monsoon season. 😊 Our crochet styles are also made exclusively by hand. The artisans who work on these styles are afforded the opportunity to work while caring for their families in an effort to build and sustain a stronger community.
