I TRIED IT:

The Carpe Diem Shorts

By: Sarah Moxham

Take it from me – running in the summer can be a slog.

But it can also be a great time to connect and relax, especially in the right gear.

Over my 15 years of running I’ve learned plenty of tips and tricks to stay composed when things get intense. But none of that matters because as soon as it’s above 75 degrees out –all my previous experience of keeping my cool while running goes out the window. Cue: sweat in eyes, soggy shorts, squishy shoes. Girls who get it, get it.

That was until I met the Carpe Diem Shorts.

YOU’RE GOING TO WANT 1,825,689 PAIRS OF THESE.

I run about six days a week, and total out around 50 miles in a week. I spend a ton of time in running clothes. So, wearing lightweight and functional shorts is really important, especially when logging long miles in the summer heat.

These shorts are airy, breezy, lighter than air, barely there…all the things. The water-resistant fabric is smooth and doesn’t get bogged down with sweat as I’m running. They have a built-in brief liner made with sweat-wicking fabric for an added layer of comfort. A huge plus for me was that the brief liner actually stayed in place while I was running – a big win as I usually wind up with a built-in wedgie instead.
Now I won’t lie, as great as these shorts feel, the ribbed waistband gave me pause since I have sensitive skin and am pretty prone to chafing. I recently ran Philadelphia’s Broad Street 10 Miler and finished with chafe marks all over my ribs and hips from my shorts and bra (fun!). So, I usually prefer something low-rise with minimal texture to it, alongside a good anti-chafe balm.
I was pleasantly surprised at how soft the waistband felt! It hugged my body while I was running so no chafing, and it’s thick enough to give a bit of support, too. Plus, there’s a hidden back pocket built into the brief liner that lets me store my keys and Gu hands-free, a serious upgrade from stashing them in my sports bra and hoping for the best.

Previous gripes about the heat aside, summer running is always one of my favorite activities because it means I get to be in the sun and spend time doing something I love. Now that I know I have the perfect run short for all my workouts, I can’t wait to get miles in.
