Hair Hacks: Wispy Bangs, The French Girl Way The best way to hit refresh is cleaner than ever…

The best way to hit refresh is cleaner than ever…

Wipsy, curtain, sideswept, wavy — the many iterations of bangs in 2022 are easier to name than ever thanks to TikTok accounts dedicated to styling them to perfection.

The one thing they all have in common?

An ability to absorb all of the oil from your forehead before the rest of your hair even whispers of needing a wash.

It’s why many cool French babes will tell you that they keep theirs at once photo-ready and relaxi-taxi-tousled thanks to frequent trims (often their own handiwork) and the occasional spritz of dry shampoo.

Ingredients Always Matter

I remember a world when ‘dry shampoo’ was a term that hadn’t yet hit the mainstream, though I’d read about celebrity hairstylists for actresses like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston using baby powder to add volume at the roots and cut grease. The scent of the talc alone made it too repulsive to consider at the time (and thank goodness, Johnson & Johnson just announced that they’ll end all global sales of the stuff next year after thousands of health lawsuits).

Instead, if I saw the telltale separation of too-oily fringe happening, I would wash my bangs in restroom sinks and restyle them while leaning under the hand dryer. It worked, but required a very strategic (and public) setup to pull off compared to a discreet bottle of floofy powder small enough to fit in a handbag.

Plus, modern formulas put more thought than ever into the ingredients designed to touch your scalp.

The Natural All-Stars

A few formulas stand out in the sea of dry shampoos for their non-aerosol packaging (that’s carry-on approved) and clean ingredients.

Brigeo Scalp Revival Dry Shampoo, for example, incorporates clay, tapioca and rice starches to absorb oil, witch hazel to balance, and biotin to support the hair follicle.

After puffing the product onto the hair, you’re meant to let it sit for a couple of minutes and then brush or fingercomb it away to remove the powdery residue.

Its fragrance isn’t overpowering, though it’s definitely on the sweeter side of the spectrum if you’re wondering.

For a lighter scent that leans closer to a desert-themed fine fragrance, Voir She’s Like The Wind Dry Shampoo easily has the best name in the game (I laughed out loud).

It also includes a bonus conditioning agent for tangle-prone hair types, making it a dry shampoo + conditioner combo.

A finely milled micropowder containing ingredients like kaolin clay and silica pumps out in a puff and distributes onto all hair colors like a transparent veil.

Then, there’s completely unscented (and genderless) Act + Acre Plant Based Dry Shampoo, which was designed by editorial hairstylist Helen Reavey to detoxify and nourish the scalp with every use.

Made of only six ingredients, one of the recipe all-stars is fulvic acid. The “super-nutrient” delivers minerals directly into the follicle to restore the microbiome.

One pump is silky and clean — and delivers your bangs the same kindness.
