Hair Hacks: These Satin Hair Rollers Give a Natural Blowout With No Heat

These satin hair rollers give a natural blowout with no heat.

I have an abnormal amount of hair.

I know this because when I was born, the doctor told my mom that. Also, in eight grade, when I saw a specialist about my then-persistent headaches, they prescribed -- a haircut. I’ve never had a bob, or even shoulder-length hair. Instead, my thick hair has always cascaded past my waist, and is currently so long I often sit on it by accident.

That being said, I don’t really like doing my own hair because it takes hours at a time. I can’t actually remember the last time I blow dried it fully, and whenever there’s a special occasion I overpay for a blowout. That of course means even more moola because of my hair’s thickness. But recently I’ve been seeing the Kitsch satin pillow rollers all over social media, and they looked easy enough to try for just $14, so I figured why not.
Because my hair is so high maintenance, I tend to avoid heat because it never makes it look quite the way I want. Instead, I prefer the natural waves that come from sleeping with your hair in braids, and even after a professional blowout, I prefer my “day two hair.” The satin pillow rollers allegedly help you achieve that luscious waves look with no heat whatsoever, which in my opinion is the goal of any hair product I’ve ever tried before.

Since I can barely braid my hair, and have actually never used traditional rollers, I was wary of how bad I would be at putting these in. Thankfully, they’re pretty much childproof, and all you have to do is roll a section of your slightly damp hair upwards towards your scalp. Then I just tucked my hair underneath so nothing stuck out, folded the roller, and snapped it shut. Since there are six rollers in a packet, I divided my hair into six sections to repeat.

For the second roller, once I was about to snap it close, I just made sure to link it through the first roller before snapping it together as per the instructions. Since I have an affinity for breaking hair ties, I was shocked to see how efficiently this worked, and it really kept all of my massive hair in one place. In total the process took maybe two minutes at max, and the final step is to just go to bed, which is ideal.

I thought falling asleep in these rollers would be difficult, but they’re so soft that I barely noticed -- they felt like another layer of pillow. Once I woke up, I undid the rollers, and was in awe of how painless the process was. The satin means there was no tugging or breakage. My hair basically glided out of the rollers quickly, and I instantly saw the perfect waves I’m constantly trying to achieve just appear. It looked so good I actually got mad at myself for a second.

"
I can’t believe I’ve never tried these before, and have instead been spending hundreds at the hair salon when I can be spending minutes at home for nearly the same exact look.”

The waves also lasted a shockingly long time, even after a day walking around in the extreme New York City heat, sweating more than I’d like to admit. Before bed, I didn’t necessarily have to use the rollers again — my hair really still looked that good — but the process was surprisingly therapeutic, and I wanted to feel the awe of watching my abnormal amount of hair glide out of the rollers come morning.
