Bala Bangles fans: this one’s for you.
If you work out on a regular basis you know there’s pretty much nothing worse than 30, 60 minutes of moving, sweating, pushing, and then – time’s up, and you’re left unfulfilled.
This has happened to me more than enough times, specifically on my dedicated leg days – doing squats, deadlifts, or glute bridges, after which I don’t really feel my muscles working. Like I needed a little something extra to help activate those muscles.
That’s where Bala Bands came in.

I’ve been an avid Bala fan since I tried their iconic Bangles a few years ago – since then, they’ve been my go-to for upping the ante on low-intensity workouts like walking or Pilates. I strap them on to my wrists or ankles and go for long walks and, in turn, elevate my workout status from leisurely stroll to racking-up-the- miles endeavor. Still, my higher-impact workouts needed a lift.
Again, Bala Bands – which create resistance when added to your routine, for legs especially. Made of woven elastic fabric, they slide easily above your knees and, as you move into a squat or a leg lift, stretch to add an extra layer of difficulty to your movement.
With each movement, you work against the resistance of the bands, using your muscles to make them stretch, creating tension. The resistance stimulates your muscles, getting them involved even in small movements like squat-walks and side steps. I find that they also help me to focus specifically on said movements, since you can really feel the pull in every move. They create the mind-muscle connection I find I’m often missing in band-less workouts, connecting me with the part of the body that the exercise is actually targeting.
They come in a pack of three – for light, medium, and heavy levels of resistance. Basically, they do the job of a dumbbell and make your workout burn. so. much. more. Seriously, I did a whole leg workout using only Bala Bands, and I was more sore the day after that than from a typical leg day in the gym! Plus, they’re totally portable so they’re perfect for at-home, equipment-free workouts. Pro tip: you can add them into a weighted routine to take things even higher!
I love to start my workouts with a circuit of banded exercises to help warm up my muscles. I promise you, since I started using bands, I’ve noticed such a difference – everything “wakes up” a bit more and then, when I go into my weighted exercises, I know that those muscles are working. I also throw them on for squats and glute bridges to add extra resistance alongside my weights. They’re also perfect for spicing things up when your routine has gotten a bit repetitive.
Bala Bands have now become a staple in my leg day routine — I use them in practically every workout whether I’m at the gym or at home, and I’ve even packed them in my suitcase to inspire some on-the-go movement. Sometimes I’ll even add my Bala Bangles to my ankles while I do my banded workout — just to keep things interesting.
When it comes to intensity-boosting workout accessories — you’ll always find me jumping on thebandwagon.
