What Socks Should I Wear With These Shoes?

By: Carrie Yotter

Birks, boat shoes… there’s a sock for that.

I don’t know how many times I’ve laid out an outfit, put on said outfit (and then climb up on a bed or chair to see it in all its glory), only to fix my focus on – my feet. The shoes definitely work with what’s happening but – is the sock really doing what I want it to? All of a sudden, I’m flooded with doubts about their length, color, knit. Do they even play nice with these shoes?? And, especially this time of year, in the Northeast, one has to wonder if I’ll actually be comfortable.

A dear friend who’s worked as a stylist for years offered up some sage advice on a few pairings – for your essential Birkenstocks, boat shoes, loafers and Mary Janes – that absolutely check all the above asks.

BE A GOOD SPORT: CREW SOCKS WORN WITH LOAFERS

If you want an effortlessly cool, good-for-everywhere look, this loafer/faux jacket combo is chic, but attainable when matched back to a hoodie and crew sport sock. Though not everyone will see you sporting your stripes, the classic tube says you’re confident and will no doubt put extra spring in your step – holiday shopping, checking out a matinee, or just catching up with friends. And loafers – adds a bit of maturity and class to an otherwise fun outfit.

FLIRTING WITH THE IDEA: OVER-THE-KNEE SOCKS WORN WITH HEELS

Overall, this is a perfect date night look – whether you’re headed out with friends or a fave new someone. Monochromatic outfitting makes the outfit feel more elevated and put together. But the pairing of a femme (and fun) going-out heeled shoe and over-the-knee socks, along with subtle layers, gives a touch of flirt.

“Proportion and balance are key when pairing the right socks with your shoes. Where the sock hits your leg should complement a shoe’s essence – if you’re wearing a Birkenstock clog, for example, you’ll want to consider a crew to knee-length. But in true homage to, say, a Boston, the classic thick, chunky sock is its best friend.”

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK: SLOUCHY KNIT CREW SOCKS WORN WITH BIRKENSTOCK CLOGS

Comfort doesn’t need to be relegated to the couch (or coach seat). Though this look is ideal for traveling, it can get you through pretty much any leg of your day-to-night, anywhere. Errands, walking the dog, binge-watching a new show…No surprise the Boston Birkenstock clog is paired back to a thicker gauge crew sock, because – no reason to fiddle with a classic. Cozy and roomy layers on top provide versatility and, here again – big fan of tonal dressing to give it purpose and (a little, but too much) maturity.

PUT SOME PREP IN YOUR STEP: CREW-LENGTH SPORT SOCKS WORN WITH BOAT SHOES

Boat shoes are definitely an "it girl" trend right now, but for good reason – they pair with everything from jeans to a fun little micro. Effortless, yet so pulled together...They’re a new take on the loafer, if you will. So they warrant a look that’s made to be seen. The crew-length sport sock here is clearly visible, which helps to add a cool factor and collegiate feel to an otherwise retro-inspired and subtly sexy look. When’s brunch?
