I Tried It: The No-Shower Happy Hour

No time for a rinse? No problem…

By FP contributor, Caitlin Madden.

I am a born and bred beach girl. I grew up spending summers at the Jersey Shore where going to the beach is an all-day event. You wake up, get your bathing suit on, load up the cooler and bunker down in the sand for the foreseeable future.

Now, I’m not entirely sure if this concept exists outside of the beach towns I frequent, but here, No-Shower Happy Hour is a weekend tradition. You hang out at the beach all day and then pop over to one of the bars as the lifeguards leave at five o’clock sharp. Most people stay in their bathing suits and flip-flops, so it’s truly a just-off-the-beach activity as the name implies.

Post-beach activities do not require a trip home (or to your hotel, etc.) to get gussied up, but I don’t love going out without a little refresh after sitting in the sun all day. Now that I’ve had years of practice, I’ve created a pretty simple post-beach routine that allows me to be ready for the rest of the day in just a few easy steps and in less than 10 minutes.

Just throw these in your beach bag and you’ll be ready to go wherever the rest of the day takes you.

Cool + Glow Towelettes

Just because I’ve left the beach, that doesn’t mean the beach has left me. There’s nothing more irritating than leaving sand and SPF residue everywhere long after your beach day is over. Whether you have a long drive home from a day trip or are headed straight to happy hour, you want to feel fresh and clean, not sweaty and sandy. If you don’t have time or a place to shower — these towelettes are perfect for a quick refresh. Soaked in Japanese Hot Spring Water, they wipe away sweat, dirt and other impurities easily – no rinse necessary. They’re also infused with jojoba oil to soothe skin and cooling menthol (perfect for post-sun!).

Deodorant

After sitting in the hot sun all day, I’m sweaty, probably a little stinky, and in definite need of a refresh before I go anywhere. I always keep a stick of deodorant in my beach bag so I can reapply it as needed throughout the day, and swipe it on quickly if I have post-beach plans. This one from Summary has antioxidants so it’s super soothing, and it smells so fresh and clean with notes of lemon and bergamot. I love the travel size because I can easily throw it from my beach bag into my purse and keep it with me all night.

Detangling Brush

Between the wind, taking my hat on and off through the day, tying my hair up, and switching positions on my towel or chair — my hair gets messy at the beach. I’m talking knots and tangles and flyaways, and not in a cute windblown way. Luckily, this brush gets them all out with ease — I don’t even need a mirror. I just put a little dry shampoo in, brush through the lengths of my hair, then fluff up the roots and I’m good to go. Plus, the flexible teeth on this brush comb through my natural waves without making them frizzy and puffy so I can keep that just-off-the-beach texture.

After a few quick tricks I’m good to go — whether I’m heading to happy hour, need to make an early dinner reservation, or I’m just heading home and don’t have a place to wash up — you’d never know I just spent six hours in the sand.
