One writer’s scented journey back to the perfume game.
By contributor, Laura Lajiness.
Confession time: I was a fragrance fanatic in my tween and teen years. Like many, a certain aqua blue bottle containing a distinctive (iconic, even!) perky fruity-floral aroma became my first signature scent. And let’s not forget my foray into the sophisticated realm of eau de toilettes from a particularly popular French house that I took a chance on.
But somewhere along the line, I took a detour. My perfume enthusiasm fizzled, and I embraced the au naturel vibe, going so far as to ditch scented lotions altogether. Well, cue the plot twist — I want back in the fragrance game. The problem? Nothing on the shelves seems to quite strike the right chord with my nose (yes, noses can be picky too).
So, I pondered, could the secret lie in getting personal? You know, custom fragrances and all that jazz. But I’m not so much a bespoke product kind of gal — A) it’s a lot of effort, and B) I’ve really pared things back to the basics. Snaps for my beauty minimalism, yeah? Enter fragrance layering, a concept that sounds more achievable and way less intimidating. But where to begin? My fragrance revival mission started with one thing in mind: escape the fruit and floral cage. Vanilla? Not my jam. Musky and earthy? Not so much my groove, either. But hey, I still want to smell pleasant and leave people with that lingering “she always smells so good” impression. So, I did what any reasonable scent-seeker would do — I contacted some experts.
Step one: get schooled in the art of fragrance layering. Step two: find new scents that won’t make me smell like a walking cliché. Armed with my determination and a few spritzes of hope, I embarked on this scented journey.
Expectedly, fragrance layering is like creating a complex cocktail. It’s not just about “one and done.” It’s about playing mixologist with your perfumes. Think of yourself as a symphony conductor, blending different scents to create a harmonious masterpiece.
I learned that the magic often happens in threes — base, middle, and top notes working together like a perfectly synchronized dance. This included body oils and lotions — yes, indeed, such products can serve as a functional and enriching layer when mixing things up. So, I spritzed my way through an array of options with the grace of a bloodhound, trying to find my new signature aroma.
And you know what? I discovered scents I never thought would go together, like the warm floral, citrus, and vanilla-y Surf scent from Free People’s all-natural 1809 Collection ((trust, I’m shook that I’m not only tolerating but loving this elixir — it seriously smells like vacation), and Milk Layering Eau De Parfum from the gender-neutral line, Dedcool (the word “milk” alone first gave me pause, but I was surprised and captivated by the ultra-light, fresh, and slightly musky scent). I even went so far as to figure out my rising and moon signs (which are the same?!) to give the cosmic energy-inspired line, Zodica, a try (I’m not a huge zodiac-er, but wowsers, the stars aligned as I now adore the blend of Cancer and Gemini aromas).
So, here I am, on the cusp of a fragrant revival, embracing the layers, the notes, and the unexpected blends. I’m ready to charm with my new personalized scents, to be that person who always smells delectable. And if you ask me, that’s a journey worth taking — one new layer and spritz at a time. Ahead, my interviews with the experts behind each of my new go-to lines, so you can feel as enchanted by fragrance layering as I now am.

On the fragrance layering trend:
“It is such a fun way to personalize your scent and concoct new and interesting scents based on what you’re in the mood for. Maybe something extra spicy? Extra bohemian? Extra calming? It gives people a chance to experiment and play with their favorite fragrance notes and ultimately create a one-of-a-kind scent unique to them.
Similar to layering fashion or jewelry, items by themselves are lovely, but when layered with a complimenting counterpart, it creates a whole new look, feeling, or experience.”
On the basic principles of fragrance layering:
“There are no rules. That’s the beauty of layering! You decide what you like or don’t like. You can be your own perfumer and mix and match different notes and formats together.
I suggest experimenting on a small patch of skin or fragrance blotter prior to applying it all over to be sure you enjoy the initial scent and also the dry down. Personally, I tend to use only two products when layering and like to layer traditional perfume sprays over scented body oils. Not only does your skin glow and smell good, but the fragrance tends to wear a little bit longer.
I enjoy 1809 Zen Eau De Parfum over 1809 Lodge Body Oil for a warm, rich, woody scent. These two scents share similar fragrance profiles. Layering single note perfumes such as rollerballs with more complex perfumes also works nicely, such as Rahua Palo Santo Oil Perfume with The Nue Co. Forest Lungs Fragrance.”
On 1809’s formulation process:
“The collection contains pure plant-based aromatic raw materials extracted by a physical process versus a chemical one. Pure, clean, and true to its roots, each scent is free from synthetic ingredients, harsh chemicals, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and dyes. They’re also dermatologist and allergy-tested, cruelty-free, and vegan.
As for the collection name, 1809, it celebrates our customer and brand, nodding to where it all began: Free People’s first office at 1809 Walnut Street in Philadelphia.”
Tips for layering the Surf fragrance:
“Our 1809 Surf Eau De Parfum is your quintessential beach fragrance and plays nicely with other fresh, fruity, and floral scents.
Pairing it with more gourmand notes, such as vanilla, can give it more depth, while layering it with a more grounding note, such as sandalwood, can bring out a more sexy element. Surf, to me, is the ultimate freeing summertime scent and can be worn in many ways; over body oils, lotions, SPF, or even an additional spritz to a hair mist.”

Carina Chaz, Founder and CEO of DedCool
On the fragrance layering trend:
“Layering is a new and fun way people can express themselves through scent! We created the DedCool Collection to give you the tools to create your own signature scent because we believe you should smell uniquely you. Scent is dynamic and can change based on your mood and how you feel. It’s a way to express yourself. We believe you shouldn’t ever be limited to smelling like everyone else.”
On the basic principles of fragrance layering:
“Spray the first scent in desired areas. We like to apply it on our neck, wrists, or elbows (but get creative and spray as little or as much as you’d like). Wait 20 to 30 seconds before applying your next scent. Repeat with as many scents as you’d like. We recommend starting with layering two scents together! Feel free to use lotions throughout this process as well.”
On Dedcool’s formulation process:
“DedCool was created to break the traditional mold of the fragrance industry — a mold that basically forces you to smell like everyone else. We really disagree with that because scent is deeply tied to identity. We believe that expressing yourself through scent is a really cool (and easy) way to own your individuality.”
Tips for layering the Layering Milk:
“The most popular fragrance layering combo is our Milk Layering Fragrance mixed with our 01 Taunt Scent .”

Kristi Moe, Founder and Maker of Zodica Perfumery
On the fragrance layering trend:
“Mixing fragrances, which has long been popular in other parts of the world, is now trending in the West. People are intuitively creating bespoke perfume that fully expresses who they wish to present to the world without paying the high cost of a custom-made scent. Layering existing perfumes is much more accessible and less intimidating than starting from scratch. Ultimately, people don’t want to smell like someone else. They want to smell as unique and interesting as they are. It’s like graduating from a box of crayons to a painter’s palette where they can create a scent story as unique as themselves.”
On the basic principles of fragrance layering:
“Fragrance layering should be fun and playful, but there are some basics one can keep in mind. If you spray the lightest fragrance first, it will get buried by the heavier ones. Therefore, start first by spraying a heavier fragrance. This may consist of woody notes, amber, or musk. Next, add in a medium-weight fragrance, such as florals. Finish with the lightest fragrance, like a citrus-themed scent.
Explore with different amounts of spritzes you use for each. If you want just a whisper of a certain fragrance, spray that one from a distance. Don’t forget you can incorporate lotion — it will help make the scent you build last longer. When you find a mix you love, write down the combo so you don’t forget.”
On Zodica’s formulation process:
“Zodica’s formulation process was extensive in that it was based on blind scent studies. Perfume really is personal, and we found our personality drives scent preference. Our collection is essentially twelve different personalities for each of the zodiac signs. We’ve used aromatherapy ingredients known to work with brain chemistry to elicit certain feelings. Within the twelve perfumes are four mini-collections.
Each zodiac sign is linked to an element in astrology and shares similar personality characteristics. We designed each element grouping to share similar ingredients so you can layer them easily. All the fire signs contain vanilla to provide warmth. All the air signs include citrus to feel light. The earth signs contain a wood note for grounding. And the water signs have florals for emotional depth.”
Tips for layering your sun, moon, and rising fragrances:
“When layering your sun, moon, and rising signs, first identify which one is the heaviest. Spray that first, followed by the next lightest. Play with combinations of spritzes until you find one that resonates with you. If you have another fragrance that you love, add that to the mix as well. I recommend avoiding being too rigid. Perfumers know that sometimes the magic of perfume comes from a note that actually smells really bad on its own but, when paired with other notes, creates an irresistible depth. I don’t like patchouli on its own, yet it’s in many of my fragrances because of the character it provides in a blend. The only rule to layering fragrance is that it should make you feel magical.
Time is probably the most overlooked ingredient in making a blend. Be patient. Give each blend a chance to show you who it is. Don’t judge a perfume on the initial sniff. Perfume dries down through layers and changes over time as your body temperature evaporates the oils. The notes you smell first will burn off within five to ten minutes. Your nose also needs time to rest so it’s not overwhelmed.”
