RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS

The Denim That Does Something Good

By: Jules Boyd

Here’s the breakdown: regenerative cotton is changing the game.

Since 2019, our Care FP initiative has aimed to continually make conscious choices — from involvement in our local communities to making more responsible manufacturing decisions. Our impact pillars and product standards have helped to promote circularity, waste reduction, and resource preservation, as well as an overall transparent approach to how we speak to products that fall under Care FP’s guidelines. As our responsible product assortment grows, whether from in-house styles or brands we love, so is our commitment to upkeep the standards that help create Care FP in the first place.

Enter Citizens of Humanity’s Regenerative Cotton Program.

Through a partnership with farms across the country, COH has acquired over 3 million pounds of regenerative cotton since 2022. Historically, growing cotton is one of the most chemical-heavy and soil-damaging systems; using regenerative cotton, COH has positively impacted the future of responsible fashion while empowering farmers and minimizing environmental harm — and we’re so excited to add these jeans to our Care FP roundup.

WHAT EXACTLY IS REGENERATIVE COTTON?

Regenerative farming aims to improve the health of soil through methods and practices that restore the carbon balance to the atmosphere. The cotton produced through these methods is therefore regenerative, meaning it was responsibly grown and sourced with minimal harm to the environment!

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM ORGANIC OR RECYCLED COTTON?

“Organic” materials are produced under strict parameters and guidelines that ensure their production is managed without the use of most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. While “organic” denotes the specific substances and practices that can and cannot be used, there are no hard rules to protect the land and environment.

TLDR: WHAT’S THE POINT?

With growing concerns about the fashion industry’s impact on the environment, initiatives like COH’s Regenerative Cotton Program and Care FP are part of a bigger conversation to be a little bit better every day. Implementing data-driven approaches to responsible farming and stricter parameters on what makes an article of clothing fall under these pillars is just one step towards a positive future for our clothes.
