FP MOVEMENT

We Tried It: Jiu Jitsu

By: Sarah Moxham

Get ready to spar…

I have never taken a martial arts class.

The closest I’ve come to feeling capable in self-defense was a boxing class I took in college after seeing Creed (anything for Michael B.) I’m 5’2’’and not very strong. I’ve lived my whole life kind of accepting that I most likely am not able to defend myself without the help of my trusty pepper spray. Taking a self-defense class felt practical, though I had no idea how strong and confident I would feel walking away.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu traces its roots to 19th-century Japan, where it evolved from Judo, which focuses on using your opponent's energy against them with throwing moves. Jiu Jitsu builds off this, and emphasizes leveraging technique over strength.

What stuck out to me, and what is core to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is the confidence instilled in practice. It requires just as much physical training as it does mental, which is what piqued my interest in it. While it fulfills the practical need for self-defense, Jiu Jitsu is incredibly empowering and taught me to trust myself, and others, in a new way.

WHERE WE WENT:

As soon as you walk into the House of Arts Jiu Jitsu and Judo (HOA), the energy is palpable. Owner and instructor Thiago Thomaz brings the same excitement and passion from the first hello through every demo – and it's contagious.

Thiago is an accomplished Jiu Jitsu fighter who has been practicing for 20 years since he moved to the U.S from his native Brazil. Thiago was energetic and spent time talking to us about the roots and principles of Jiu Jitsu and Judo, and while he brought humor to his instruction, he never lost focus of how important self-defense is, which I really appreciated.

WHAT WE DID:

Both Jiu Jitsu and Judo are related in that they are focused on using the energy of your opponent against them. Judo does this through redirecting and throwing moves, while Jiu Jitsu focuses on grappling technique and leverage to overpower an opponent. Though Thiago teaches both, we focused only on Jiu Jitsu moves.
Judo vs. Jiu Jitsui
We began the class with learning how to fall safely, protecting our neck and head from taking any unwanted impact. Then we learned how to get up from a fall while keeping a defensive stance and protecting our face. With these two basics secured, we moved on to learning escape moves - one standing and one laying down. We paired up and practiced these moves with each other, and while the focus was self-defense, it was also a really fun bonding activity for all of us.

Thiago went around the class and had us all practice our moves on him, and this is where it really hit home for me. Thiago is about 6’4”, so over a foot taller than I am. When he asked me to practice immobilizing him standing and laying down, I was immediately intimidated, not by him but by my own feeling of inability. However, he showed me how to size down an opponent (by having me kick the back of his knees so he was kneeling instead of standing over me, allowing me to use my own leverage against someone bigger than me) which helped to instill confidence in myself regardless of my size.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:

I appreciated that we had to disconnect from our phones, from work, from stressful thoughts, in order to focus completely on learning and using new moves. I felt truly present, and tuned into my body, my teammates, and the instructor.

Overall, my biggest takeaway from this class was that we all have innate power and ability no matter our size or fitness level. Jiu Jitsu gives us tools to use our bodies to our advantage and protect ourselves. I genuinely have never felt more empowered. Some of that is owed to the practicality and energy that Thiago teaches with, but a lot of that is because even in the short hour I practiced Jiu Jitsu, I immediately felt the confidence and resilience it teaches.

WHAT WE WORE:

This type of exercise requires freedom of motion. In Jiu Jitsu, you use your whole body with each move, so clothing with stretch and sweat-wicking is important to stay comfortable. We all wore the Power Walk Tank and mixed and matched with our pick of FP Movement bottoms.

I loved how breathable the fabric was while still providing a fitted feel that wasn’t restricting. I definitely worked up a sweat and really appreciated that the cotton blend fabric dried relatively quickly to keep me feeling fresh.
