STYLING 101

Set The Tone In Monochrome Outfits

By: Haley Gaylor

For Valentine’s Day…and every day.

Monochromatic dressing is like Valentine’s Day as a single 26-year-old: beautiful, organized chaos. To stay in, to go out, the possibilities are endless, as with the styling. Partial to the eye-catching hues of pink and red myself, I wanted to play with these bold colors in a landscape that often favors the neutral side of things.

GALENTINE’S DAY OUTFIT

Whether you and your girls are cuddled up with a gorgeous bottle of red or decide to meet for your monthly crochet club- there’s nothing quite like the love of your platonic relationships. A red outfit felt right for Galentines, and the Willow Cardi felt like a no-brainer for the styling. I wanted to play with different textures and silhouettes with this look, and the GNASH Towelling Swim Shorts felt like the iconic missing piece that I needed. Micro shorts are in for 2024, and red flags are most definitely out.

COZY OUTFIT FOR A NIGHT IN

I love very few things more than a GNI (girls’ night in), and pajama dressing is one of them. My favorite way to style the Cloud Nine Lounge Pant is with a seamless cami moment that still bears a certain level of playfulness. The Duo Corset Cami does exactly that- it wears soft and cozy to the skin but still offers those flirty details we know and love. I kept with the pink monochrome outfit theme by pairing the pants with the Flirty Cheeky Panty and the Pointelle Plunge Bralette to add those feminine, Intimately Free People moments.

THE (ALLEGED) DATE NIGHT OUTFIT

If you think a onesie is only for warm weather, you underestimate its potential. It’s versatile, consistent, and stylish- unlike your situationship who failed to make V Day plans with you (dump them). The Basique Boyshort Onesie is one of Free People’s best staples, and for good reason. The seamless fit glides over the body and the styling opportunities are endless. I paired the onesie with the metallic Idle Hands Sling bag and Sheer Hearts Tight to bring more shine and playfulness to the look.

A BOLD OUTFIT THAT DOES THE MOST

If you aren’t all dressed up in the bathtub listening to SZA’s “SOS” album on repeat, WYD? I’m a go-hard-or-go-home kind of gal, and this look symbolizes just that. Layering is always made easy with the Brexley Bodysuit, which goes seamlessly under every outfit. The look couldn’t be completed without an iconic piece, and the Bardot Fleurette Flower Mini Dress felt like the best choice for the job. The babydoll fit, the feminine boning on the bodice -- a Valentine’s Day dream. To keep in the spirit of all things frilly and flirty, I added the Coucou Lola Swiss Dot Socks to tie the look together.

Monochromatic dressing isn’t for the weak, but it’s a challenge worth accepting, not unlike Valentine’s Day itself. Playing with monochrome within your wardrobe is an easy way to elevate your style without too much thought. Whether you’re celebrating by yourself, with friends, or dare I say with lovers, infuse your Valentine’s Day outfit with some kind of organized chaos of your own this year.
