A Guide To NY, The FP Way
By: Molly Stuart
Keep these must-see’s in your back pocket…
Hi Free People fam! My name is Molly Stuart. I’m 24 years old, have lived in the city for just shy of 6 years, and have been with FP SoHo (1853) for 5 of those years! Having been from the Bay Area in Northern California, I transferred from the West Coast’s Walnut Creek location where I was a seasonal stylist for a Summer. I absolutely fell in love with the company culture and knew I wanted to stay in the mix part time while I was at college in the city. In my five years at 1853, I have worn many different hats at the store and now am proud to own the title of one of our Assistant Store Managers! I adore assisting in the hiring process and connecting with inspired, creative hustlers on a similar journey as my own.
I knew I wanted to move to New York as soon as I set foot here at 13 years old. My mom and I went on a trip to visit for my birthday when I was in seventh grade, and I quickly promised her that I wouldn’t be applying to a single state school. I knew then that I only wanted to attend college if it meant I’d be living in New York. As many things change throughout a high schoolers formative years, that goal remained consistent for me. I packed up my life when I was 18 and flew across the country to start a new one. I remember settling in over those first few months and feeling like I had truly met myself. I fell in love with the constant buzz and community. It’s such a singular experience to live here, that you wittingly or unwittingly belong. There’s an instant comraderie when you’re navigating these streets every morning as a resident rather than someone visiting. This city can chew you up and spit you out, but defying that builds character, resilience and true belonging.
Without further ado, here are my recs for a “perfect day” recipe in NYC…
S’ANT AMBROEUS (WEST VILLAGE)
There’s no better way to start your day than with the perfect cup of coffee. As a self proclaimed latte connoisseur, S’ant Ambroeus is home to my most favorite cappuccino by a landslide. Among the three Manhattan locations, the West Village spot located on W. 4th and Perry St. by far takes the cake. If the weather permits, grab a seat outside, order their Cappuccino Viennese paired with a slide of Princess Cake and enjoy the people-watching!

10 FT. SINGLE/STELLA DALLAS (WILLIAMSBURG)
Admiring and collecting vintage clothing is a lifelong hobby of mine, but an expensive one to keep up with living in NYC. I’ve spent years venturing around the city to various thrifts, flea markets and estate sales, but have yet to find a better vintage selection than at Stella Dallas. Located in the heart of Williamsburg (Brooklyn) right off the L train, her two stores (10f Ft. Single and Living) sit side by side and are home to some true gems from eras that span a century. Be sure to check out her selection of hand-dyed vintage slips in the back of her Living shop.

JACKIE ONASSIS RESERVOIR (CENTRAL PARK)
Need to blow off some steam, get out of the house, or are just looking to stroll around and enjoy a beautiful day in NYC? Throw on some sneakers and Bala Bangles and go for a run around the Reservoir in Central Park. Named after Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Onassis Reservoir is the perfect 1.5 mile jog complete with scenic views of the Midtown skyline.

THE BEEKMAN HOTEL (FINANCIAL DISTRICT)
Any time I have friends or family visiting from out of town, the Bar Room inside The Beekman Hotel is an absolute must for drinks and tapas. Not only are the cocktails fabulous, you’re seated beneath the stunning buildout of the 19th century-office-building-turned-hotel. This is the perfect stop to pull out for a special occasion.

QC NY SPA (GOVERNORS ISLAND)
Looking to get out of the hustle bustle of NYC? Kick your feet off with a day pass to the Governors Island Spa just a quick ferry ride away from Lower Manhattan. This place has everything from pools, saunas, steam rooms, facials, massages, and panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline!

ALICE AUSTEN HOUSE(STATEN ISLAND)
Alice Austen was a celebrated New York queer photographer, most known for her candid street images and her intimate depictions of women’s lives and relationships in the Victorian era. Her home in Staten Island has since been transformed into a historical landmark and museum to honor her photographs and life story. The museum is just a short ferry ride away from Manhattan, complete with a free up-close view of the Statue of Liberty.
Additionally, the museum board does a wonderful job of organizing meaningful events and hands-on workshops (i.e. gardening parties, collage making etc.), resulting in a lovely community surrounding Alice’s legacy.

FREEMANS (LOWER EAST SIDE)
Last but not least, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of my most favorite restaurants and hidden gems, Freemans. Hidden in the back of an graffiti alley in the Lower East Side, you’ll find Freemans to be the coziest dinner joint that feels like a true New York prize. Bonus points for it being one of Taylor Swift's favorite spots!
