SHEER PERFECTION:

FP’s Guide to Fine-Gauge Styling

By: Jules Boyd

“I love that — but I have no idea how to wear it.”

It’s a thought that has popped into my head countless times when I look at a piece of clothing with a fine-gauge finish. Early fall is the perfect opportunity to experiment with layering, and while I absolutely love the look of sheer styles…I fall short when it comes to actually figuring out how to style them. So, I turned to the experts at Team FP — because I know I’m not alone here — for outfitting help.

WHAT EXACTLY IS “FINE-GAUGE?”

When it comes to knitwear, the gauge is the number of stitches and rows in a certain area, but there are a few other contributing factors that determine how large the result will be. The type of material and tools used can directly impact the size of the stitches and rows — for example, a chunky, fisherman-style sweater generally uses heavier materials and about 5 gauges, while a fine-gauge knit uses around 24 to 30 gauges. Fine-gauge styles are made with finer, delicate material, and woven with smaller needles, thus giving them that signature semi-sheer finish.

HOW DO YOU STYLE IT?

The key, in my opinion, to fine-gauge styling is to know what looks best underneath. Our iconic Nocturnal Solid Cardi is a staple in every collection, but try adding something sultry like the Last Dance Lace Triangle Bralette underneath for an unexpected touch of texture. For something more sheer like the Daphne Tunic, try pairing it with the Barely There Swit Bra for added cozy coverage.

CRAVING COLOR?

Want to add a little extra pop? Try the We The Free Robbie Turtleneck Sweater layered over the Downtown Darling Longline Bralette. The sporty silhouette is the perfect contrast to the lacy finish of the bralette. Our We The Free Gibson V-Neck Pullover is a classic V-neck style, and the Mesh Triangle Bralette is the perfect base to complement the cozy washed fabrication.

MORE LIGHT-AS-AIR LAYERS:

Intimately’s On Air Collection is the perfect first step into the world of fine gauge, especially with the ultra-lightweight finish, because you can layer it both over or under just about anything you want. Style the turtleneck over the essential Gita Bralette or The Last Dance Teensy Triangle Bralette, or build an outfit by wearing it as a base layer under the Cashmere Reversible Wrap Sweater. The options are truly endless!
See? Nothing to be afraid of — we’ve got your back. Happy styling!

Xoxo, FP.
