The Stevie Sheer Kaftan

A cover-up with endless possibilities…

A silhouette that dates back to ancient Asian culture as a symbol of prestige and luxury, the kaftan has remained a steadfast element of cultural outfitting ever since, from celebrating the significance of official rank to providing necessary comfort in warmer-weather climates.

It may be from this purpose that I reserved my cover-ups for summertime outfitting. But recently, in my constant styling experimentation, I came to understand just how transitional the kaftan can be in modern outfitting. The lightweight, subtle-shine Stevie Sheer Kaftan proved to be a perfect accoutrement for year-round styling and layering.

The Micro Shorts Look

For this look, I wanted to give the Stevie some edge and really play up the proportions. The micro short underneath lets me show off my legs as well as the sheerness and texture of the kaftan. I also paired with a studded boot and belt to bring some toughness to such an airy piece.

Pro tip: add a statement belt -- make it super low waisted and turn it a bit to the side. Instant elevate.

The Vest Look

For more of a going-out look, I paired the Stevie with a sheer lace slip underneath. The texture of the slip and the Stevie work really nicely together! To layer up our top half, I opted for a blue suede studded vest – I think this really plays into the Stevie’s retro feel.

The Graphic + Denim Layered Look

These days I’m really feeling the super layered silhouettes. I love the look of a dress over pants, so I figured why not kaftan over pants?! The Stevie looks amazing on top of a puddle-y denim to achieve a dramatic layered look. I also wanted to add in a sporty graphic tee for an extra cool factor and to further balance lengthy proportions. This is a great way to transition a summer piece to wear in the fall!!

Pro tip: If you’re going for an ultra layered look, make sure at least one layer is sheer!

The Jacket Look

Here I layered a short sleeve leather jacket with the Stevie – I love how cropped the jacket is in comparison to the length of the kaftan. The short sleeve makes for a really nice balance so we see just a bit of skin. The boxing boot is also a really fun way to bring in some trendiness to this garment.
