Intimates Layering, Unexpected
By: Laura Sanderson
Redefining what “Made To Be Seen” really means.
Unique layering touches are such a quintessential aspect of Free People–always bringing in the unexpected to make our collection feel unique and not necessarily adequate for anyone who blends into the crowd. For me, as a stylist, layering unexpectedly can look like color pops, asymmetrical necklines, playing up sleeve lengths, and unusual accessory layering/pairings. Here are a few of my favorite unexpected outfits, featuring our Intimately collection, shot in FP’s photo studio.
LOOK ONE: UNDIES POP UNDER MATCHING SETS
For this outfit, I loved bringing in a contrasting color pop bra and undie match back. Instead of going with a similar v-neckline for the bra, I opted for more of a contrast–which feels a bit unexpected–and more of a statement. Instead of the bra and undie serving as true foundations, they now feel essential to the entire look–making the intimates the outfit narrator of your matching sets.
Also loved layering up the jewels in this outfit. Bringing in a mix of shell and metal jewelry–very Chloé-esque! Since the outfit is so femme, I went with delicate golds and a minimal body chain.

LOOK TWO: SUEDE AND SATIN
For this next look I wanted to show how to wear–and bear–intimates out and about. Everything you see here sans jacket is from Intimately. Again, very much inspired by the recent Chloé shows. Love the juxtaposition of the suede jacket with the soft satins–making suede summer-ready. This outfit feels like a statement but at the same time so effortless, like it went right from bed to brunch. Again, loving the mix of shell and metals–layering up different chain lengths.
Another thing I always look out for when layering Intimately is not only the neckline but the arm hole and how low it sits–love how when the jacket comes off there’s a peek of the bra underneath. No detail left undone.

LOOK THREE: TOUGH BUT SWEET
Look closely—the purple tops you see are actually two tank tops layered. Loved the idea of opting for an unexpected double tank combo instead of the usual bra layering. Also liked the contrast of the more masculine utility trench coat mixed with femme tops.
LOOK FOUR: A TONAL TAKE
For our last look, I love how both the utility pant and the sheer blouse are statements in and of themselves. Going tonal makes the combination much more wearable and easier. I did opt for a pop color contrast bra and undie match back underneath.
