Your Main Character Moment with Intimately FP

By: Gwen Attridge

Key pieces to make your wardrobe feel straight out of a movie.

Rom-coms: They make us laugh, they make us cry, and they almost always make their way onto every mood board. But why? What makes these scenes, stories, and characters so iconic? Look no further than the costume closet, because the outfits are essential to the long shelf life of endearing media. Whether it be an iconic dress, a PJ set, or even the simplest on-the-go outfit, so many of these looks live rent-free in our minds.

And there’s a simple equation that explains this hyper-fixation: Nostalgia + Relatability + Aspiration = ultimate main character energy.

It's the perfect concoction of longing for the past, feeling attainable, while pushing boundaries that remains key to how these characters, and their closets, hit home for so many of us. Sigh, if only we could be them…

I have great news…YOU CAN! With a little delulu and the right wardrobe, anyone can be the star of their own personal rom-com. It’s called main character syndrome, and all the cool people have it. With the rise of personal documentation through social media, we’ve all basically landed the leading role in our lives, with pictures and videos to show for it (just like the screen-grabs and scenes from your favorite movies)! And even better, you’re in charge of the outfits. That’s a win-win if you ask me.

Now that you have the main character mindset, let’s delve into what to wear. Think romantic, effortless, playful, and sometimes a little out of the box…

This sounds like a job for Intimately, Free People’s beloved line of intimates and beyond. From stunning slips to timeless tops, we picked out just what you need for your swoon-worthy, rom-com-inspired wardrobe:

THE MATCHING PJ SET

Nothing beats the iconic wake-up scene. With a wide-shot of the room, seeing all of the character’s trinkets and decor, you really get a sense of their true essence. They pop out of bed, dancing around the room to their alarm clock song, in a pair of matching pajamas or a sweet slip, of course. Nothing feels more idyllic than that. This gingham set is sure to have you up, moving, and using your hairbrush as a microphone.

ELEVATED BASICS

This is an extremely overlooked part of the main character’s wardrobe. Their sleek, everyday outfits just seem to look a little better than average, and you can attribute that to classic cuts, simple details, and flattering fabrications. Think unexpected button-downs, cool textures, soft delicate knits, and necklines that never go out of style.

DARING BOTTOMS

Here’s where things get fun. Whether it’s a printed pair of pants, teeny tiny micro shorts, or even a skirt with a bustle (looking at you Carrie B.), bottoms are where main characters truly have their moment. Funky patterns and unexpected details stand out on bottoms, where they are less likely to be found than at the top. They have that true stick-in-your-mind charisma that so many main character outfits possess.

“THAT” DRESS

We all know that scene. More so, we know the dress that makes the scene. That jaw-dropping, awe-spiring number worn when everything falls into place. The ultimate pin on everyone’s vision board. It makes your heart flutter just thinking about it. While there are many iterations of this dress, we think it boils down to one particular style: the maxi slip. Silky, long for extra drama, and filled with dainty details. Intimately does all of this best.
See? Easy as pie. Why think your dream life is out of reach, when it could be hanging right in your closet! Not too bad if you ask me. Roll credits!
