Call it my new attiTooD…
From contributor Aemilia Madden.
I’m not one to usually wear much makeup.
Especially during summer, when I’m averse to a full face of glam (since a night of dancing simply means it all sweats away). So this time of year, when I want to take my look up a level, it’s always about the eyes. They’re the windows to the soul, sure — but they’re also the easiest way to make a big makeup statement with minimal effort.
That means I’m always experimenting with swooping liner, bright colors and, unsurprisingly, plenty of sparkle. I don’t think you can be too heavy-handed with eye makeup if you keep the rest of your look minimal.
With hope of achieving ‘70s glam greatness in the months ahead, I tried TooD’s color cream liners and Bioglitter super sparkly formulas that the brand promised I could apply wherever I want (yes, including my body and even hair). While head-to-toe glitter is probably best reserved for a musical festival, I did think an easy to swipe on shimmer would make for the ideal night-out choice.
First, I tested out the range of options on my wrist, then I moved on to layer them up on my lids. I wanted to try them both in the sun and in a darker corner of my apartment so I could get a better sense not only of the overall glimmer, but how the makeup might read in a dingy cocktail bar post-sunset.
My initial impression: the color creams went on smooth and even. Less of a hard sparkle, and more of a soft shimmer, these metallic glosses would make a great top layer to swipe over my regular cat-eye liner. The applicators aren’t as fine as a liner brush, so instead of aiming for sharp lines, I just tried for an overall layer of shimmer across the eye.
Then came the Bioglitter, which is crafted from non-toxic plant cellulose (hence the name). I applied this tacky, soft makeup by dipping my finger into the pot (pros might suggest a small brush, but I live on the wild side). The glitter was a mix of tiny sparkles and larger paillettes that gave instant disco ball glimmer to my upper lids. The sparkles are colorful, but the makeup itself doesn’t have any pigment, so I’d consider this a great final step to a fully fleshed-out eye. Maybe swiping the glitter over a purple, pink, or blue shadow. I will say that the larger sparkles meant that this can get a little messy. So don’t expect the Bioglitter to stick to a concentrated area; instead, you’ll likely spot little sparkles sprinkled across your face like sun-catching freckles after a few hours.
For all of you who spent January and February impatiently waiting for the next Euphoria episode, this shimmer, playful eye makeup look is probably already on your radar, but I’d like to vouch for the fact that what makes these products great is the fact that they’re a choose-your-own-adventure application. If you choose a subtler color cream like the pearlescent Brother/Sister, it will simply add a slight “I want to party” sheen to a jeans and tee going-out look. But, if you layer on products, the result is a full on glam look that you can pull together in just a few minutes.
After testing out the sparkles, I took them for a spin, meeting up with friends for an evening cocktail. Not only did I make it home with my shimmer intact, I managed to rack up some pro-sparkle compliments over the course of the evening. I’d call that a success.
