Wellness 101: Bye Bye Hang-xiety

And say hello to mindful drinking…

Most of us have been there at least once — the, in my humble opinion, World’s Worst Hangover™. Admittedly, it can be hard to say no to a night out after a busy week of work and commitments, and the warmer months are usually the perfect invitation for social drinking. Temperature above 75°? Let’s grab a cocktail. Sun is still up after 7:30 p.m.? I’ll toast to that. And though these are all great ideas in the moment, the after-effects are definitely something that do not age like fine wine (pun intended).

When I discovered the “mindful drinking” ideology on social media by chance, I was intrigued to say the least. Essentially, it’s a concept that encourages people to question their relationship with alcohol, whether that’s living a sober lifestyle, trying to cut down on drinking habits, or just looking for ways to make more conscious decisions in a culture that promotes drinking in excess. Highlighted within the tagged #mindfuldrinking trend was the use of mocktails — an incognito way to enjoy the experience of drinking a cocktail without the aforementioned blues that come the next day (not to mention the inclusivity factor for those who choose not to drink). I have often felt an unspoken pressure to drink alcohol in social settings, especially to ease my nerves, which stems from the need to keep my hands and mouth busy. Seeing people discuss having a healthier relationship with alcohol was something that sparked my interest — and led me to think ‘why haven’t we been making delicious, colorful, and *euphoric* mocktails this whole time?’
…The word euphoric hails from the Greek "euphoros" – a state of well being, from eu- + pherein, which means to bear or to bear well within. Aptly enough, euphorics can utilize the properties of adaptogens (balancing agents), nootropics (brain boosters), and/or botanics (therapeutic plants/herbs) in their concoctions to potentially alter your being -- naturally -- but without the lush-ious side effects.

So let’s raise a glass (full of your favorite cocktail, mocktail, or anything in between) and toast to the excitement of trying something new.
