The secrets of our favourite creators… Discover how we’re disrupting the Scandi uniform with unexpected FP energy.

A year ago I hadn’t even been to Copenhagen, and now saving pins of “cool copenhagen scandi-girl aesthetic” is all I can do to stop browsing hotels for my next city break. My feeds are saturated with cool Danish girls and my Google Maps hit-list of “CPH recommendations” is nearing the 100 mark. Maybe it’s the perfectly layered outfits or Juno’s cardamom buns–either way, I’ve been well and truly sucked into the Scandi-style fashion hype–and I’m not mad about it.

Danish girls just get it. They’re the ones leading trends–be that in fashion, food or design–and functionality is at the heart of everything they do.

SO, WHAT EVEN IS SCANDI CHIC?

Scandi fashion is all about practicality. It’s rooted in functionality with punctuations of playful elements. It’s never try-hard, and it’s always authentic. Often anchored in muted neutrals and earthy hues, the Copenhagen girls start with classic silhouettes and then layer it up, playing with shape and colour.

The Scandi aesthetic has a way of being put-together in an effortlessly cool way without it being too fussy or purposeful. Kinda like the Olsen hair tuck, but for clothes. Except it takes me at least three attempts to perfect my tuck. It’s about not trying too hard and embracing a look that is often a little tough but distinctly feminine at the same time. Think shape, layering, functionality, plus injecting a fun print or a pop of colour.

HOW FP STYLES SCANDI

Why hear it from me, when you could hear it straight from the horse’s mouth? We were out in Copenhagen last week celebrating the first birthday of our FP store on Christian IX's Gade, and we took this moment to shoot our favourite Copenhagen-based fashion muses.

Here are their six simple tips for a Scandi look:

COLOUR COMBOS

It’s all about the mix. Try grounding your outfit with earthy neutrals (warm oatmeals, creamy whites, chocolate browns, and slate greys) and then elevate them with highly intentional hits of primary colour. This is also a fun new way to style denim blues.

Jemimah’s fit does just that. She serves confidence with strong hits of primary red, balanced out with a reliable bomber and tonal balloon trousers for a softer, fresh feel.

FEMME COLOUR BLOCKING

Balance soft femininity and it-girl edge with colour styling used to structural effect. If you focus on solid, intentional blocks of colour, it creates a clean, sophisticated visual break that is both fresh and layered. Astrid’s soft, minty pastel slip, layered underneath a more structured jacket is a perfect example of using colour to define distinct parts of this Scandinavian outfit, creating the perfect harmony of structure and softness.

BANDANA STYLING

If you’re stuck for ways to add a bit of fun and interest, bandana styling is the ultimate hack. Tied around the neck, woven into the hair, or attached to a bag, they serve as quick, joyful hits of color and texture that break up a minimalist outfit perfectly.

LOW-SLUNG BOTTOMS

If you don’t know fisherman trousers–get to know. These oversized bottoms take nautical cues, have a cinched waist and make for the perfect slouchy-but-put-together fit. Anna Winck, aka. my girl crush, wears hers low on her hips with a cute cropped long-sleeve for that Scandi undone look. These would go with everything from a simple tank to a statement jacket.

TUNIC OVER MAXI TOP STYLING

Jemimah proves that layering isn’t just for winter; it’s a Scandi styling sensibility that adds depth to your outfits even in the warmer seasons. She effortlessly pairs an asymmetric, tiered tunic top and balloon trousers with a more structured shirt to ground the look.

SPORTY ACCENT STYLING

Comfort is key in Scandi dressing. Addie’s fit is the perfect example of adding that sporty edge. The relaxed trousers provide a grounded base which is balanced out by a simple, vibrant pink sporty-touch tank. This mix of street-heavy bottoms and athletic-inspired layers is the ultimate trick for mastering that effortless, on-the-go energy.

THE KEY PIECES OF SCANDI STYLE

To achieve Scandinavian style, start with those grounded foundations: the perfect pair of slouchy trousers, crisp button-down shirts, structured jackets and high-quality basics. From there, build out your statement layers with an unexpected colour pop and accessories in primary hues for a Copenhagen edge.

SCANDINAVIAN STYLE FAQs

Where did Scandi style come from?

Scandi style comes from the basic Scandinavian design principles of functionality, minimalism and quality craftsmanship, applied to fashion. Culturally, it’s an extension of values like Hygge (cosiness)–think comfortable knitwear and neutral palettes–and a commitment to sustainability, resulting in a wardrobe of durable, long-lasting basics.

In cities like Copenhagen, this evolved into a distinct, cycling-friendly aesthetic—think effortless layers, trench coats, and trainers that prioritise movement.

Is Scandi just neutrals?

While it started with neutral palettes, modern Scandi fashion has shifted into that "Scandi-cool" expressionism, famously disrupting those traditional minimalist foundations with the bold silhouettes and vibrant, joyful pops of colour you see on the streets of Copenhagen today.

What’s the easiest Scandi hack to try?

Add a bandana or a single primary-colour accessory to a neutral outfit to instantly uplift your look with minimal effort.
