ways-to-wear-a-button-up-shirt

A lesson in outfit creativity.

It’s finally summer and even though we may not have the freedom typical of past summers, I’m still trying to keep my spirits up by finding new and creative ways to wear my favorite summer staples.

During these hot months, I find that an oversized, airy shirt is a must — just something easy you can throw on and be done. They’re effortless, comfortable, and versatile.

This year’s staple to see me through the season? The Summer Daydream Button-Down. Its gauzy material and rugged raw hem make it ideal for twisting and knotting or donning bare and undone.
As I recently passed my 100-day mark of working from home, I’ve chronicled how many ways I can adapt my tried-and-true oversized shirt to fit my mood of the day.

Monday

After the weekend, I am fully energized to start the work week. But a part of me is still in that chill mood — especially in the mornings. I think they call it “easing into the week,” so I usually opt for something equally effortless and airy to evoke that sensibility. Turning my oversized shirt into a dress is the perfect outfit for those feels. I team the shirt with femme boxers for that extra bit of comfort and security.

Tuesday

Ok, now we’ve got the energy going. It’s hot and humid here on the east coast, so today, a transitional outfit is on my mind. My house tends to be a refrigerator due to the air conditioning system and, by the afternoon, I like to take short breaks in the sun. Today, I’m thinking a bandeau (I DIY’d the one above with leftover fabric!) and unbuttoned shirt are an easy pair to throw on — rolling up the sleeves to make it extra laidback. I accessorized with a chunky gold chain bracelet to balance the breezy look.

Wednesday

Happy Hump Day! Wednesdays are usually the days I head to the local grocery store — either first thing in the morning or on my afternoon break — to get some flowers to brighten up my home and some snacks to keep my energy levels up. I’ll be walking outside, and sometimes there can be a chill in the air. I slip on a breezy dress and put on my shirt just in case I need to keep the cool at bay. Grab my market bag and we are good to go!

Thursday

Thursdays are usually the days I have the most Zoom meetings, so I’d like to look a little more put-together and less relaxed. I’ve been seeing a lot of muses wear their button-downs off the shoulders, which gives a classic shirt a modern and fresh look. I wanted to try it to see how it turned out. I simply unbuttoned it, knotted it, and tucked the tails underneath my top. (I loved that my shoulders could breath!) I added my favorite woven belt as a waist-cinching accent.

Friday

It’s Friday! We like to turn up the heat in the house and play some fun, upbeat music. Usually we have a dinner date at night (at home, of course), but we like to pretend we are going to a restaurant. We usually dine al fresco in our backyard and it’s good for the soul. I decided to get a little bit creative and see if I could turn my shirt into a mini tube dress and it worked! You just take the sleeves and tie them in a knot at the front so it looks like a bow and let the rest of the

Saturday

It’s the weekend and the sun is out! I am such a sun child, and nothing relaxes me more than being under the sun. Today, I will be spending a lot of time in my backyard. A sarong is key. What’s so nice about an oversized shirt is that it’s long enough so that when you tie it around your waist, you can pull it off as a skirt — perfect for the backyard or the beach. Once again, I paired it with my DIY bandeau for a pop of print.

Sunday

Let’s be honest: Sunday is laundry day. And summer’s most versatile staple deserves a little break.

That is, at least, until I break it out again next week.
