Team FP Tries Fly Fishing

Team FP Movement share their experience…

We asked the FP Movement team a few questions about their recent trip to Colorado’s majestic San Juan Mountains. On this journey, our team, along with a few friends of the brand, journeyed to the San Miguel River to try their collective hand (literally) at fly fishing, a sport which finds its origins spanning centuries and continents, and requires little more than a rod, a fly, and perseverance.

Was this your first time fly fishing?
We had been fly fishing before outside of Steamboat Springs in Colorado, in the Yampa River. For the majority of the group, it was their first time.

Tell us about the environment/location near Telluride.
The San Miguel, a gorgeous river approximately 30 minutes outside of the town of Telluride.

Can you describe your gear? Both fishing equipment and apparel?
We wore waders and boots. Fly fishing rods and flies were provided by our guides. Despite the hot weather (which quickly manifested into a thunderstorm) we wore some of our favorite light layering items -- Mile A Minute Layer, Tempo Long-Sleeve Tee, Never Better Leggings, Buti Baseball Hats, and the Quinn Vest.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least, how much patience did fly fishing require? Skill? Focus?
Definitely an 8! It requires a ton of patience, but the beautiful environment made it such a fun activity. Focus is required. Our guides taught us the basics of casting as a group and then we all had guides that worked with us while in the river and pointed out tips and tricks for casting.

Talk us through one round of casting. What were your joys and challenges?
It was fun to learn a new skill amongst friends. Learning to cast was all about soft but graceful motions with the arm.

Did you catch anything?
One of us caught a fish within the first 15 minutes! (Trout are the most common fish found in the San Miguel.) We were with a team of guides who required that we release all caught fish. 😊

Did you pick up any tips you can share with anyone else who may try fly fishing?
Try it! Literally everyone in the group found it to be a relaxing activity. They were able to connect with nature in a really tactile and different way as it was new and outside of everyone’s comfort zone.

Would you try fly fishing again?
100%! It was great to try something brand new to the group. We would love to go again!
