Behind the Designs of Our Fall Jacket Shop

Every September, Home Office goes abuzz about jackets. As we anticipate the imminent fall season, everyone thinks about how to up their layering game, and that often begins (and even ends, in some cases) with jackets. Because sometimes, an entire outfit’s success leans on what that final piece provides–whether it’s functionality, form, or measure of fun.
In advance of our jackets campaign, we spoke with Noa about six of his favorites from the assortment–what inspired them, and where you might find these jackets out in the autumn wild. Though, according to Noa, it was hard to choose any favorites because he “loves his children equally.”

1. THE CLOUD NINE RUFFLE BAND JACKET
The Cloud Nine was inspired by the idea of putting on the rare, antique Edwardian jacket you found at a Paris flea market and stuffing it over a really romantic, cool, flowy shirt. I was really excited to get those two feelings–really nice tailoring and ethereal prettiness–into one sort-of hybrid garment.
2. THE CHELSEA FUNNEL-NECK JACKET
The Chelsea was my passion project–making the perfect city jacket. It was about finding an amazing new shape, one that felt undeniably cool. We spent so much time getting the wash just right, too. I love seeing people wearing all of its iterations in different colors, like it’s a collector’s item.
3. THE WE THE FREE JACKEE SUEDE JACKET
The Jackee Suede was designed by our We The Free designer, Shannine, who is amazing at leather product as well as wash development. I think it’s so cool how the silhouette is belted and has that feminine kick with the pleats, but then it has this sick rugged wash. When the prototype came in everyone lost their minds.
“I think the common thread was–we wanted everything to be ooohh-ahhhh delightful. A lot of these we made in-house, so the line is very much a reflection of the team’s instincts and what we want to see this fall, from really clever takes on band details to incredible washes.”
4. THE PYRE EMBELLISHED DUSTER
The Pyre Duster feels very quintessential Free People; we have a history of these kind of Penny Lane-inspired jackets, and this is our super opulent plush take. I love that I could see someone wearing this to a fancy party, but in equal measure see them throwing it on over a t-shirt and sweatpants to go to the grocery store hungover.
5. THE WE THE FREE RYLAND VEGAN LEATHER BAND JACKET
I am a band jacket lover, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and really wanted to get one into our vegan offering. The Ryland is sort of lowkey–it’s not too much, but I love the little details, from the really great wash to the stitching on the front plackets. There’s a lot of little touches that I like the idea of someone finding after they’ve owned it for like several months and they’re like “Oh!!”
6. THE CROVIE COAT
The Crovie Coat is one of my favorite styles in our woolen coat range this year. I wanted to do something that started from this sort of traditional-heritage-item place, with the English check, but then do it in a really cool new shape. We cut these very long vents up the side, and I want to see someone running down the street to catch a taxi and the coat is billowing behind them. This coat is super, super nice, it’s very luxe and cozy.
“I’m so excited for our fall jacket line because the team had so much fun designing and making it all. It feels like a return to form to a lot of Free People-isms: we’re so excited about all the band jackets, the really luxe fabrications, the explosions of color, and how dreamy everything feels. Our goal is to make getting dressed in the morning and putting on your jacket a moment of genuine joy.”
