Because if you’re gonna have your jeans forever, you should know them like the back of your hand…
When you choose a life partner, it’s important to know them inside-out, right? Like, there are a lot of things to take into consideration before such a big leap of faith. But when you do make the decision, it feels right, it just makes sense—it’s informed (or at least it should be).
In our opinion, buying a pair of jeans should feel exactly like that. You know what you’re getting yourself into, and you know that it’s gonna be your perfect fit. After all, it is a very essential, (hopefully) forever investment.
But with the denim landscape changing and rearranging and reinventing itself over and over and over again, it can feel next to impossible to make a purchase that feels so sure like this. The assortment is wider, the trends go in and out, and the terminology is on its own planet compared to other apparel. If your head feels like it’s spinning, don’t worry, ours is too. So we’ve decided to confront this denim dizziness head-on by laying it all out in a tried-and-true form, one that you (and we!) can go back and reference until the end of denim time (aka never)...
Our in-house heritage label We The Free presents: The Official Denim Dictionary—a collection of terms, trends, and timeless elements that are unique to our jeans. Assuming you’re brushed up on the basics like straight and wide and what-not, this guide takes you deeper into more nuanced topics like fresh new leg shapes, hemlines, fabrications—that upper-level denim stuff. Yeah, we’re not messing around…
So take notes, and then head to our denim category like a jean-ius, ready to make the most informed purchase of your life! Because it’s time to know your perfect pair inside-out, before it even hits your doorstep:

Barrel Leg /ˈberəl leɡ/
We’re considered experts on this one now. Barrel jeans feature a leg shape with a distinct curved outseam that billows out from the hips and tapers at the ankle, giving a sort of sculptural “bowed” effect that looks as cool as it sounds.

Twisted Seam /ˈtwistəd sēm/
Denim with a twist—the hottest new detail that could be as big as barrel. Instead of a straight outseam (opposite of inseam), twisted seam jeans feature an outseam that, for lack of a better word, twist towards the front of the leg. This creates more volume at the shin area for a fresh take on a relaxed look.

Arc Leg /ärk leɡ/
Balloon Leg /bəˈlo͞on leɡ/
Comfy doesn’t mean boring. Balloon jeans feature a voluminous leg shape that billows out at the hips and stays wide until it suddenly cinches at the ankle, creating a balloon-like look that’s sure to turn heads.

Flare /fler/
An FP signature. Inspired by retro designs, flare jeans stay fitted and flattering at the top and billow out from the knee down for that iconic bell shape.

Slim Fit /slim fit/
Our catch-all term for all things form-flattering. Think skinny, a hugging straight-leg jean, or anything that hangs out a little closer to the body for a classic, contoured fit.

Low-Slung /ˌlōˈsləNG/
The key to that effortlessly slouchy look. Unlike rises (high, mid, low), low-slung jeans focus more to the entire hip than just the waist placement. Designed to sit low with a dropped crotch, they’re meant to just hang on at your natural hips for said “slung”, almost oversized fit (that somehow also hugs perfectly at the waist so they don’t fall).

Lightweight Denim /ˈlītˌwāt ˈdenəm/
The authentic look you love with a breezy, airy feel. This specialized lightweight denim fabrication is still considered rigid, but with a lighter weight that can be worn in warmer months (or all year-round, in our opinion).
Examples:
Breezy
Lotus
Freebird One Piece (because we don’t do just jeans)

Rigid Denim /ˈrijəd denəm/
Talk about the dawn of denim—rigid jeans were there from the jump. Like your favorite vintage pair, the OG cotton-twill fabrication has no stretch, but boy is it durable. The look and feel are totally timeless, and why we’re still talking about it today.

Comfort Stretch Denim /ˈkəmfərt streCH denəm/
