Imagine for a second, if you will, you’re in a crowded space when you catch a truly transporting scent. You swivel around trying to follow the smell, weirdly sniffing at strangers until you pinpoint the source and then work up the courage to ask them what they’re wearing. “Oh, my perfume? It’s super-popular-fragrance-everyone-else-wears.”
Sigh
Well, it’s a cult classic for a reason but scent is deeply personal. And you’re a person who wants something personal, something unique, something deeply you. So rather than grab something off-the-rack, why not consider investing in a little experimentation in the quest to find your signature scent, the smell no one else in the world is rocking. It’s not about finding the perfect bottle; it’s about creating your perfect vibe. Enter: scent layering.
Think of scent layering like crafting a custom cocktail, but for your pulse points instead of, you know, your mouth. Layering scents is all about strategically, thoughtfully combining products with different notes (oil, lotion, perfume) to create something totally bespoke. Not only do the layers help the scent last longer, they also ensure no one else smells exactly like you. Now let’s play alchemist.

How to layer fragrances right for–and only–you.
WHAT IS FRAGRANCE LAYERING?
Think of scent layering like crafting a custom cocktail, but for your pulse points instead of, you know, your mouth. Layering scents is all about strategically, thoughtfully combining two or more products (oil, lotion, perfume) with different notes to create something totally bespoke. Not only do the layers help the scent last longer, they also ensure no one else smells exactly like you. Now let’s play alchemist.
On the fragrance layering trend:
“It is such a fun way to personalize your scent and concoct new and interesting scents based on what you’re in the mood for. Maybe something extra spicy? Extra bohemian? Extra calming? It gives people a chance to experiment and play with their favorite fragrance notes and ultimately create a one-of-a-kind scent unique to them. Similar to layering fashion or jewelry, items by themselves are lovely, but when layered with a complimenting counterpart, it creates a whole new look, feeling, or experience.” - Christine Campbell, Associate Director of Product Development, 1809 Collection
“Layering is a new and fun way people can express themselves through scent! We created the DedCool Collection to give you the tools to create your own signature scent because we believe you should smell uniquely you. Scent is dynamic and can change based on your mood and how you feel. It’s a way to express yourself. We believe you shouldn’t ever be limited to smelling like everyone else.” - Carina Chaz, Founder and CEO of DedCool

HOW TO LAYER FRAGRANCES
We talked to some of the experts behind several top perfume lines. Here’s what they have to say on the basic principles of fragrance layering:“There are no rules. That’s the beauty of layering! You decide what you like or don’t like. You can be your own perfumer and mix and match different notes and formats together.
I suggest experimenting on a small patch of skin or fragrance blotter prior to applying it all over to be sure you enjoy the initial scent and also the dry down. Personally, I tend to use only two products when layering and like to layer traditional perfume sprays over scented body oils. Not only does your skin glow and smell good, but the fragrance tends to wear a little bit longer.”
- Christine Campbell, Associate Director of Product Development, 1809 Collection
“Spray the first scent in desired areas. We like to apply it on our neck, wrists, or elbows (but get creative and spray as little or as much as you’d like). Wait 20 to 30 seconds before applying your next scent. Repeat with as many scents as you’d like. We recommend starting with layering two scents together! Feel free to use lotions throughout this process as well.”
- Carina Chaz, Founder and CEO of DedCool
"I think we've all been layering fragrances without realizing it to create our own unique scents–I like to start with my body lotion and/or deodorant as a base and then build to add 2 different fragrances on top by layering the heavier scent (like wood, amber or vanilla) first on my pulse points and then spraying the lighter (more fresh/citrus/airy) scent on top. This way the delicate notes don't get completely overpowered and can still shine on top! I mix it up depending on the weather and how I'm feeling to match my mood."

YOUR FRAGRANCE LAYERING TIPS + GROUND RULES
Simplicity: The most impactful scents are built from the ground up so start with something that has a clear, identifiable scent profile. A body wash that claims to smell like “fresh rain” or a body lotion that reeks of 20 different types of flowers is just gonna create noise. We’re looking for harmony here, not chaos.
Foundation: Choose a base layer that’s an all-over product, like a body oil or cream, which will both moisturize your skin and give whatever you layer on top something to cling to aka increase its staying power.
Location: Once your base layer is in place, dab or mist your chosen perfume or fragrance oil onto your pulse points: wrists, nape of your neck, behind your ears, even the crooks of your elbows and behind your knees if you’re really going for it. The warmth of these areas help diffuse the fragrance throughout the day.
Vibe: Have fun. There are no hard-and-fast rules here so play around! Figure out what scents and notes you’re drawn to, what plays well with each other (and what doesn’t), and go from there. Also remember that a big part of how something smells on you is based on your own individual body chemistry so something you love on your friend may show up wildly different on your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions on How to Layer Perfume
What's the best way to start layering fragrances?
Begin with lighter, fresher notes like citrus or floral scents on damp skin right after your shower, then layer heavier base notes like woodsy or musky fragrances on your pulse points. This creates depth and helps each layer shine through beautifully.
How many sprays should I use when layering?
We recommend 1-2 sprays per fragrance, keeping your total to around 4-6 sprays so the blend stays balanced and wearable. Focus on pulse points like wrists, neck, and behind your ears where your natural warmth will diffuse the scent.
Can I layer perfumes from different scent families?
Absolutely! Mixing complementary families—like pairing florals with musk or fruity notes with vanilla—often creates the most interesting, harmonious blends. Start with small amounts and test on your skin to see how the notes play together.
Does layering perfume make it last longer?
Yes, layering can extend your scent's staying power by combining quick-fading top notes with longer-lasting base notes. For even better longevity, apply an unscented or lightly scented lotion first to create a smooth, hydrating canvas.
What should I avoid when layering scents?
Skip rubbing your wrists together after applying. This breaks down the fragrance molecules and shortens wear time. We also suggest avoiding too many scents at once; stick to 2-3 perfumes for a blend that feels intentional, not overwhelming.
How do I create my own signature scent through layering?
Choose 2-3 fragrances with at least one shared note, like vanilla or amber, and apply them in the same order each day. Over time, your unique body chemistry will personalize the blend into something that's unmistakably, beautifully you.
