Why Giving The Gift Of Sleep Is Especially Important This Year

This holiday season, we’re making a case for PJ’s–as a gesture of care.

Recently, we ran a story that championed the rise of loungewear as daywear. And personally, I was thrilled about that (re)emerging trend because comfort has become paramount in my wardrobe.

(Also, as someone who doesn't particularly like dressing like everyone else, figuring out how to bring loungewear into the light of day is a challenge I happily accept.)

But at the end of the day—and I mean that literally—there's something to be said for changing into something soft and calling it a night. Because one thing I might love even more than comfort is my shut-eye.

And lately, I've been thinking a lot about sleep. Or more specifically, what a good night's sleep makes possible.

I know, how dare I even look beyond Halloween, but I've already started eyeing up 2027. Not in terms of resolutions. More like revisiting an unspoken intention that's been programmed into the granular bits of my being for as long as I can remember: to be a better person.

And I've come to realize that, for me, that begins with being well-rested.

Not because I'm determined to wake up every morning and conquer the world. I just want to have enough energy, patience, and clarity to be present for whatever the day brings. To give the people around me a better version of myself. And wouldn't it be nice if we could all do a little more of that?

Of course, I can't wrap eight uninterrupted hours of sleep and place them in a gift box. (If anyone figures out how, please let me know.) But I can give someone a little encouragement to slow down, to get cozy. And to maybe dream a little.

Beyond all the very real benefits of a good night's sleep, there's something mysterious about the places our minds wander when we close our eyes. It affords us a portal to a pretty spectacular place. So this holiday season, I'm making a case for PJ’s. Not simply as something to wear to bed, but as a gesture of care. A gift that says–"take good care of yourself.”

And with that, welcome to some of the softest, most charming, pattern-rich pieces in our Free People Sleep Shop. Which, by the way, can ALSO see the light of day, should you choose. Because who can really say where sleepwear ends and daywear begins?

Layer up, strip down, and/or above all, take care.

REST, ASSURED
